What software to use to reduce an image's size?

I am craigslisting some large sale items, i.e. furniture and bike. I have been using an old Canon PowerShot A650 IS to take pictures. Google Picasa crop feature tends to cut off the pictures. My knowledge of Picasa is elementary.

That will do for my MBP. How about our Windows 7 Pro desktop?

Picasa should do it, but don't use the Crop tool.

That's a great camera. Don't get rid of it without first looking to see the selling price on eBay.

You read my mind. I was just about to craigslist it, too.
Thanks for the heads-up.

i dont think so..
i would first turn to Pixelmator on the Mac for this kind of thing..
there are other smaller footprint image editing .apps for Mac
.. Seashore, Acorn, others....

if you need free
GIMP

Just another option for a Windows OS, PhotoScape (free). Not sure it's a PhotoShop replacement but it will get the job done once you get used to the UI. Scores decent reviews at CNET (YMMV) and it's not some huge mega-download.

I haven't heard of paint.net, I'll have to give it a try.

Thanks for the info,

I usually set the camera on a low resolution setting (800x600, or 640x480) when I take this kinds of pictures just to avoid later having to resize each file. Don't forget to change back to high resolution when done!

If you're just talking about reducing photos for web use for example on craigslist.... look at dropic. It is for mac and it is freeware. I love it. I just keep the alias on my desktop and drag a photo to it. Instantly it asks if you want small, medium or large and converts it in seconds. I just did a 1.4gb photo and it was converted to 66kb when I chose medium and the photo still looks great.
