I've tried plugging in as well as here in the lobby via wifi.

I can connect via browsers (and post here!) fine.

But I cannot even read my mail, I always time out (gmail, iCloud, work mail); even syncing my notes via iCloud doesn't work.

What kinds of setting do they have? Is there anything I can do?

If not, I'll try tethering via my iPad. That's an ok single-time solution. I'd prefer to be able to actually connect via my MBP!

EDIT: I was able to connect and send using webmail apps for each. I think they have some kind of email check - I had this once before when I visited Luther College. I wish I knew what the problem is they are trying to solve because all it is to me is a PITA!

A lot of times they block all ports except those for HTTP and HTTPS. I tend to ask for a refund in these cases, as they advertise internet access, not HTTP(S) (port 80) access. The internet is all ports.

They're pretending that they're blocking spammers and improving bandwidth for their patrons by blocking the commonly-used email ports.

Whoever set it up for them sold it as a feature.

Maybe they only have ports 80 and 443 open. I've been in places like that.

That's where a good SSL vpn box can come in handy. They use port 443.

'Saves a lot of support calls from people who expect that they should be able to connect to their office/home VPN from any network.
