I was checking in at [www.classmates.com] for the first time in several years tonight. I wanted to send an email to a friend from high school. It said that I sent the email but then prompted me to pay $2.50/mo to "insure she can read it." What the heck does that mean? They will withhold the email unless I pay? With Facebook being so prevalent I don't understand how they can charge.

They have a very bad reputation and have been the subject of several class action suits. Google them for more info, but it seems like a VERY BAD IDEA to give them any credit card info.

let's hope your wife doesn't find out, and that your high-school sweetheart does not get the email, otherwise you need a divorce lawyer

seriously, that's how all these social media troubles start.

Not even that. Their memberships appear to be uncancelable -- people who turn off auto-renew find that auto-renew gets mysteriously turned back on, that supposedly canceled accounts rise back up from the dead, and that requests for refunds are routinely refused.

classmates.com is nothing more than a scam. Avoid them. Check on facebook to see if someone from your high school has set up a class page, or check your high school's website to see if there is an alumni section.

Classmates?

If we're going to go back in time, I'm going to dump this theglobe.com stock and buy up a metric ton of AAPL, plus some physical gold, 'cuz what the heck.

Ok, first off I've known a lot of people who've worked there and they're not all bad. Yes they did pull some scams. Yes they did get sued and lost (or settled, I don't recall.)

And they don't really offer anything useful. And they keep downsizing. And they rebranded as Memory Lane. And they revived classmates.com when that didn't work so well. And they downsized some more. And they're pretty much pointless with Facebook.

And everyone I've know there has left.

Oh, and I wouldn't be surprised if they were up to their old tricks.

Years ago I hooked up with neighbors, Jr High and High School friends. I had some great chats and got a lot of news about old friends. It has also been many years since I visited that site. No billing issues back then for me . ymmv

Mrs. cbelt3 signed up for a 'trial month' a few years ago. And then the credit card charges began. Cancelling them was harder than cancelling AOL in the bad days.

Avoid like the plague. Your school's alumni group will set up a structure.. FB is the current fave for many.

Don't give 'em a physical address unless you need lots of junk mail to start fires with.

Don't send (physical mail or e-mail) requests to stop mail because that just gives 'em a confirmed response name to sell.

Lazy,

I had a mixed experience with them. On one hand, I bumped into a couple of old friends via classmates.com. This was before Facebook existed and prior to them becoming popular. However, and this was the big one, a particular individual emailed me via classmates.com to the point anger. The person just wouldn't stop sending emails to me via classmates.com. It wasn't a tremendous number of emails and they were easy enough to ignore.

I did cancel my account with classmates.com, partially because I never had much interest in it in the first place and partially due to the email issue. Very easy. No mysterious charges and unsolicited email or physical mail from them. However, and it's another big however, the emails started up outside of classmates.com. The same person emailed me from a non-classmates.com affiliated address and wanted me to become a member of Facebook and myspace.

Likely, the person found my email address somewhere on the 'net. A bit of serious searching can find it but you have to look for it. The same person got my wife's private email address and sent her emails and, if i remember correctly, the address of one of my uncles. Neither of these addresses is out there. So, finding them would've been very difficult. Whether or not classmates.com was involved, I can't say but I do know the person had initially tried to contact me through them and wouldn't stop attempting to contact me.

To make a long story short, I sent the individual an email that pretty much said in polite but harsh words, "stop emailing me and my wife". The emails stopped immediately and I've not heard from that individual since and it's been over a year. Even now, I'm not sure who the person was, how said individual got private email addresses for both my wife and myself, who said individual was affiliated with and whether or not it was a real person.

I will say, if the emails hadn't stopped, I'd've immediately started to see what kind of legal action I could take to resolve the situation once and for all. Fortunately, it proved unnecessary. All, in all, though, an unpleasant experience. Not necessarily due to classmates.com itself, but, as a consequence of using their services.

My husband was poking around their site some years ago and there was a section that was about finding old army buddies. I think you could receive one email for free per person but had to pay to answer them, maybe? Anyhow, a couple of people contacted him but he didn't want to join classmates so he was unable to answer them.

Long story short, does anybody know of a site that does connect former military with each other which is free, or at any rate not affiliated with classmates.com?

I do believe they were around before Facebook, even before the Winklevoss twins invented it.
If they hadn't been so greedy, they could have been Facebook.
