But my son needs a new one, so I thought I would ask what to get and what to stay away from.

Norelco all the way. I've used them for decades.

It really depends on what type of beard and skin he has. Don't trust any buying advice that doesn't take that into consideration. I have a thick, curly beard, and I'm prone to get ingrown whiskers. What works for a straight or downy beard is not likely to work for me.

I've used Norelco shavers as well, my dad got me started in those as that is what he uses. I've tried blade-style electric shavers and I didn't like them, I thought that they were harder to use in getting a good overall shave. But then again, I also have never tried a high-end blade style, like the Braun.

You are right that electrics don't shave as close as a blade. Here's why I use one anyway:

1. It takes less time.

2. I can use it away from the sink, for example in the car on the way to an event. (Although I admit it's a pain if I'm hot and bothered - it doesn't do well with damp.)

3. It's cheaper in the long run. I use an inexpensive Braun travel shaver with rechargeable batteries. I've been using the same shaver and batteries for years. Total cost was under $25 for the setup.

4. While a blade shaves closer, it doesn't do a very good job around my chin because it doesn't handle angles well.

5. The trimmer on the electric shaver comes in handy from time to time for sideburns, neck and other trimming that a blade would choke on.

I have a thick beard and used Norelco for many years and was bothered by how quickly the blades got dull. Three years ago I purchased a Remington R200s rotary.

Better shave (closer) than the Norelcos.
Blades (titanium) have stayed sharp.
Cost 1/3 of my last Norelco.

Not going back!

Completely agree with this. I have a thin, straight beard (although also prone to those pesky ingrowns). I find a foil shaver works well for me, but I'd bet Mike wouldn't like most of them.

Take a look at the Braun travel shaver if you don't have too thick a beard. Use with rechargeable batteries. I'm not wild about the trimmer, but the shaver works OK for me. Can be used wet if you want.

For around $20 to $22 it's very reasonable compared to most on the market. Get Eneloop or Energizer rechargables and a charger, and for about $30 you have a very serviceable and easy to use combo. I find the batteries last over a month, so I can travel without the charger. And unlike expensive models, you can just get a set of AA alkalines if you ever get caught without a charge.

Personal preference. Unless he knows one style works better for him, buy a cheapo version of both a rotary and a foil and see what works best. You can get a half decent Norelco 7310 on sale for about $40 (Target had them on closeout for $28 two months ago) and refurbs of the Reminton MS2-xxx models are about $29 on Amazon (only $5 more than replacement foil and blades).

I found the Remington or Braun better for me at least.

I keep a cheap disposable to get the parts that the electric trims poorly.

I have a Norelco, have had it for at least 15 years. Never sharpened the blades, it shaves me just fine.

I used to love Brauns, but gave up on them when they changed the foils to have way too small holes and I was finding that I was having to literally push the foil to get it to cut my beard, and was getting a ton of ingrown hairs. (I also tried Panasonic at one point, and got some of the worst shaving cuts I've ever gotten from an electric.) Based on the advice of some here, I switched to shaving in the shower with a Gillette Fusion and a good quality shaving mirror, and haven't looked back. The blades are cheap on ebay or Amazon, and I get a super-close shave with NO ingrown hairs. And no mess, since everything goes down the drain.

Here's another vote for Braun. I've got a thick beard, but not curly. The Series 7 shaver does an awesome job for me and is the closest shave I've ever had. As above, YMMV

For me, I get way too many cuts/nicks on my neck and chin when using a straight razor. I cannot go with the grain/lay of my hair because the razor does not cut it, lays too close to the skin. If I go against the grain of the hair, that's when I get irritated follicles and cuts. Oh well.

A gift Remington boke off at the hinge the fifth time it was opened for cleaning. Tried various glues, but nothing worked -- shave wasn't that close anyway. Norelcos used in the past were not close shavers either. Have a Braun travel shaver, which works, but not a close shave. Have a big Braun that cost about $120 and it doesn't shave close either but is better than all the others for me.

So, I use the big Braun followed by a regular cheap Gillette disposable to get close without a lot of pulling or burn. Good como actually.
