I'm curious which method people find most successful for ripping dvds to view through plex.

i'm quite happy with plex so far.

MDRP (Mac DVDRipper Pro)

I don't use Plex. I use Playback.

I rip with MDRP, but I encode with Handbrake.

I'm not familiar with Playback... paged through the website, and I still don't know much about it.

Is there a front end as well as the media server function?

UPDATE: Never mind, I see it's a PS3 streamer.

I use HB. I have a few setting depending on the aspect ratio.
Some aspect ratio either plex or Roku doesn't handle.
But if you're just watching on your screen with the Plex app and not the TV, either Normal or ApTV2 both seem to work well.

added challenge - I'm hoping to find something that preserves the DVD formatting. (chapters, etc) i'm not so concerned about compression.

Plex doesn't recognize chapters as near as I can figure, though HB appears to.

Handbrake recognizes chapters. I know that Apple TV, VLC, Quicktime, iTunes and iOS devices recognize the chapters as well.

HB for 99% of my rips, whatever works for the other 1%

Hanbrake for standard DVDs. Convert at high quality and you will be fine.

I "rip" all my DVDs and Blurays with DVDFab. I then "encode" them all to MKV with Handbrake.
