Because the margin on the actual electronics is so small that retailers look to the accessories to make their profits. That, and some people can be made to feel cheap by spending $3 on HDMI cables for their $3,000 TV, receiver and Blu-Ray player.

Not that I know of, but I do know that EVERY HDMI cable made so far can support this feature. The physical specification for the cable has not been changed, although there have been updates to the way data can be transferred through it.
