Had a fun shoot today working on a background image for a fragrance ad. The idea is how would fragrance molecules look floating in the air if you could see them. Scared myself for a minute when I realized how close the water tank was to the 2000 watt strobe pack.

Really a simple setup actually. 10 gal fish tank and food coloring. White backdrop lit with a bright strobe. swirl the water a bit so there are micro currents then place a drop or two a few seconds apart and start shooting as it swirls around. Best to use a tripod and prefocus on a spot where the drops will start. Takes a couple tries to tweak exposure and timing. After a couple tries you have to change out the water. (the image I posted is just flipped upside down so it looks like something floating up instead of down). I think it ended up at a 400w monolight on quarter power, Iso 200, f11, 1/125 on a 50mm f1.4.

That was pretty neat. I wonder what it would look like if you had a layer of cooking oil on the top.
