3GB more bonus space for those using Dropbox Camera Upload

From Dropbox:
If you were lucky enough to be included in our Camera Upload early beta testing period (from February 2nd, 2012 to February 23rd, 2012), either on the desktop or on Android, you are still capable of earning up to 5 GB instead of the standard 3 GB. Thank you so much for your help!

So if and when I max out my camera uploads, I'll have:

- 5GB from photos
- 2GB
- 1.5GB (from Dropquest)
- 0.5GB/referral up to 16GB. I have just 6 (3 from MRF).

I'll be up to 11.5GB which is ample for my needs given that my DSL upload bandwidth is limited to .5Mbps (what do you expect for $13/mo DSL?).

I recall that they used to offer 10GB for $9/mo but that is now up to 50GB. If I actually needed that much storage AND had decent upload bandwidth, it would seem like a fair deal since their service has never faltered for me. I love the Camera Upload feature that seemlessly uploads my photos whenever I get back into wifi range (I set it this way since I have a limited data plan). I find I take a lot more photos on my phone just because I know that I can access them via dropbox without doing anything.

I know Apple wanted to buy Dropbox a few years ago and I'm glad they resisted and continue to innovate. I can't wait to see what they'll think of next.

I'm a total convert:

1) I use it for sharing folder for writing papers between groups around the world.

2) I use it for sharing class materials for graduate school.

3) I use it for shared presentations for dealing with local politicians.

4) I will undoubtedly start using it for cloud backups of critical files.

The main bottleneck for me is the iPad's software for viewing and editing complex files likes powerpoint figures with embedded images is still pretty worthless.

I concur that it was a good thing Apple did not buy dropbox. I love that it works with Macs, windows and linux machines.

EDIT: What is Dropquest?

I didn't get a note from Drop box and I'm a member. How do I get the extra space? I went to my acct and found nothing.

Sam,

Same here. Nothing. Just a window that says I can upload photos to Dropbox but nothing about 3 gigs of extra space. A quick search found this link:

You had to participate in the beta test.

Mac,

Incorrect based on the link. You got 5 gigs for the beta test. Now, you can get 3 gigs. At least that is the case if I am reading and understanding the info in the link correctly.

My dropbox account is all kinds of messed up. I currently am using 207.4% of my available space! I think that came about when I was trying to get the 5GB of free space a few months back. Somehow, I was able to uploac but they never gave me the space. Now, I can't do anything w/ the account until I delete more than half of it. Does anyone here pay for the extra space?

You are correct. 3gb free is what's being offered now. All you have to do is download a recent version of the Dropbox app on your computer, plug in a camera/card that has photos or video on it, and let Dropbox download and automatically sync the photos to your dropbox. You get 500 mb once the first photo/video has synced, and then 500mb free dropbox space for each 500 mb of photos/videos uploaded using the camera upload feature, up to 3gb total free. Just get out your digital camera, put in a 4gb card, start shooting photos to fill up the card, hook the card up to your computer and let dropbox do it's automatic thing. That's all you have to do. Easy peasy.

once you've gotten the free space, you can delete the uploaded photos, disable the dropbox camera upload function in the dropbox preferences, and continue on your merry way. Nothing to it, other than a potentially long upload process for those of us who don't have super-speedy upload bandwidth. But it's a one-time thing, and you're done.

Here's what I'd try in your situation. Go to the dropbox forums and find a link for a new version of the dropbox app. Download and install it. Restart your computer and make sure the new version of dropbox is what's running when you restart. Try the camera upload feature as described above, see if it works at all.

If you're currently at 200% of your account, you can temporarily just drag files out of the dropbox folder onto your desktop to try and get the free 3gb space. If you're over the limit currently, it may not even try to sync, and therefore may not give you the extra free space for using the camera upload feature. You'll know pretty quickly if this works because the first photo or video you upload using the camera upload feature should give you an extra 500mb space right off the bat. If you get that, just let it do it's thing, and upload the remaining 2.5gb of photos to your dropbox for the max free amount.

If none of that works, send dropbox support an email and see what they say.

Although it says 1.41 is stable, I’d zip your old one before overwriting it.

I’m about to do the same and upload some 25 minute movies of the carpet (cam sits on carpet, records, uploads. Excitement abounds!).

I downloaded the latest version (1.4.0), I shot a video of a wall, about 3.1 GB, downloaded to my local dropbpx foder (dropbox app did that) and now it's slowly uploading to the dropbox servers, but I don't see any additional space yet. I thought the 500 MB should show up as soon as you start the upload. I am using way below 8 GB, so maybe I have to go over 8 GB to get more space? do I have to shoot more wall or carpet?

Should be automatic.

Did that file come directly from a video camera? That's how it worked in Feb for the beta. Manual uploading photos did not count. You needed to sync your camera or sd card and have drop box auto upload.

Hi everyone,

Just got two gigs of space. Hoped to beat the system by deleting all the uploaded photos and importing them again. Assumed it wouldn't work but decided to try anyway. Now I'm doing the same thing as Space and Jimmy. Instead of carpet, just doing a video of the inside of the flap covering the camera of the Griffin Survivor case for my Iphone 4s. I'll do it over and over again it until I've got my 3 GB. smiling smiley

once again, If I have 8 GB but I only use 4, and now I upload 3 GB worth of carpet, do I get 11 GB or I have to fill the 8 I have first and then upload 3 more? cause I am uploading for the past 2 hours and there is no moe space... I am using the 1.4.0, maybe I should use 1.4.1?

sounds like I found the answer

If you've finished importing your photos using the desktop application, you may still have to wait until Dropbox finishes syncing before free space is applied to your account

OK, I finished uploading, didn't get extra space. I got those 5 GB about a month ago or so, do I get 3 more today? or this 3 is available only to those that didn't get those 5 GB?

I'm pretty sure the 5gb you already got is all you're eligible for for this promotion.

Yeah, I tried too space-time, but no go. I got the 5GB during the beta period.
Still can't sneeze at my current 13.75GB for free! smiling smiley

Do you store your files there permanently, or are you just putting them there on a temporary basis, for work or sharing or whatever?

It's such a tiny amount of space…

both. i like being able to keep key files in the cloud. absolutely essential files for me like Quicken/Moneydance and a few other things are probably less than half a gig.
