A lesser know Yank but a really good slugger. He did more than average damage to the Sox and the rest of the AL.

My Grandfather gave me a Moose Skowron model first baseman's glove when I was 8 or 9. My boys still ask to use it.

I attended the same high school that Moose did, but he graduated in May of '48 and I became a freshman the following September.

I saw him play football the previous fall. And you couldn't forget Moose! He was an RB and also the team's punter, a left-footed one at that! He always seemed to take an extra step before launching the oval which induced a lot of breath-taking suspense because of the DEs trying to block the punt. But he always got the kicks away untouched.

In his senior year, he participated in a home run contest sponsored by the Chicago Tribune for high school seniors. I believe it was held in Wrigley Fields where he walloped a home run into the stands and won the Home Run Contest. That caught the MLB scouts' eye. The rest is as they say Baseball History!
