What do you think of Wind Chimes?

	Love them, music to my ears, everyone should love them.
	They are OK, but don't belong at Condos and apartments with close quarters.
	Hate them, they are 24/7, peace breakers, can't hear yourself think.
	What is wrong with the Sound of the wind in the trees, birds, etc.?

Hmmm.

Wind chimes don't bother me, but my neighbors two dogs do. They bark at everything and anything non stop until he get home from work. He works a swing shift so that means he gets home between 11 pm till 1 am or even later.

Sorry to threadjack, but just go ahead and hang your wind chimes!

I am with you on the dogs, but they are usually not 24/7....they too, need sleep. I like to read on my porch, it is like church bells going off continuously.

I like heavy deep wind chimes that kind of gong, I have one as a matter of fact and it rarely rings and when it does its deep and like a bell.

Little tinkly wind chimes that move with the slightest breeze could get annoying. Although my brain eventually learns to tune repetitious stuff out thank goodness.

I have a large set of wooden ones that I think a former tenant bought-- they rarely seem to catch any wind but I wouldn't mind having more.
Anything made of metal won't last a day in my neighborhood though...

I live on a busy street in brooklyn. Complaining about wind chimes would be ridiculous considering how loud the traffic can be.

I like the idea of keeping things quiet but i don't think wind chimes register above a peep.

I like some of the light airy barely perceptible well designed and tuned ones made of nice glass.
The metal or even wooden ones that sound like so much junk yard trash hung from wires - not so much.

The last set my wife bought are like 3 to 4' long and made if alum., powder coated I think, and sound pretty good.
We don't have neighbors near enough to hear even the loudest wind chimes so no problem there. I marked that
they don't belong on Condos and etc. because quite frankly they don't, people should be mindful of their surroundings.

I LOVE the sound of chimes, but I've learned that not everyone does. BTW, when I talk of chimes, I mean beautifully tuned ones - not just clanking metal or wood.

Love Grace Notes, but they aint cheap!

The ceramic/shell type are my least favorite, with wood and bamboo my second least favorite. But I still love them.

I like metal and glass, but my very favorite is a wooden box from Hawaii that has Some kind od soft strikers inside. The wind blows and rather than the clackity-clack of wooden chimes, there's the soft deep sound akin to a musical instrument.

That is my favorite.

I'm so grateful that you are the minority - luckily, I've never annoyed a neighbor. But an ex of mine - together we had quite a collection. Now her hubby says, "Sure - put them anywhere you want - as long as I can't hear them in the house"

poor girl... she has THE BIGGEST, BESTEST chimes in the world hanging from a tree far from their house...

I don't think Panic is in the minority. We have been having the discussion around my condo this week. Most people are afraid to speak up. They don't want to be perceived as a bad neighbor, etc. They don't want someone to go postal on them.

So far more than 95% hate them. Second hand racket of any kind is annoying. Most will put up with a temporary party, music, dog, because people have to live. But something that is ongoing, especially 24/7 becomes a huge detractor in the quality of life, and the peaceful use and enjoyment of ones own property.


I think it is similar to the person with the cell phone, speaking loudly in a public place. No one but them enjoys the conversation and often it disrupts business for the majority But folks rarely say anything.

Or similar to the sound of your own kids playing, arguing,etc 24/7. You think it's cute. Others will tolerate for a while.

Or second hand, bass thudding rap music in cars, stopped at a light.


Put the chimes inside your house and turn on the fan. Then others don't have to listen to it

I find that so interesting becuase that is not what I have found. I LIKE wind chimes. I like big loud ones. All my life, I check with new neighbors to make sure that there isn't a problem.

No one has ever objected. A little less than half say that they don't mind and a little more than half say that they love them and want to know where I got them.

Perhaps it's a regional thing. We're all so hip here in california...

You may not be as close together, as my condo. Units are stacked, and side by side. Courtyard is small.

As Decocritter said, we all put up with occasional noise. But when that noise is 24/7, like a wind chime, then it becomes a serious problem. It becomes a quality of life issue. Luckily in NYC we have many laws that address quality of life issues.

Apparently where all the annoying wind chimes are hanging.

If it is really windy, any sort of wind chimes can get load and awful sounding.

If you are away on a really windy day, it could get really annoying to your neighbours.

We used to like them. We had a nice set that was a long set of aluminum tubes that was well tuned. A wind storm and debris dented one, and it went all flat. I took them down a few days after that.
