Stupid banking question
Posted by: Acer
Date: April 29, 2012 01:44PM
I haven't spoken to a teller since 2000 when I opened an account three banks ago. My skills have atrophied.

I need to withdraw a sum of cash from a checking account larger than an ATM will allow.

What is the customary way to do this?
Do I write myself a check, then cash it, or do I use a slip in the bank lobby, or do I just go up to a teller straight away or...?

And before you ask, it's to help a man from Nigeria who has a temporary cash flow problem.

The last time I did this I think the process was that you swipe your ATM card at the teller window, enter your PIN and ask for the cash. But I don't know if all banks and branches are setup this way.

The teller will "tell" you the proper procedure.

Fill out a withdrawal slip for the amount and bring it to the teller; or write a check to "cash" and bring it to the teller; or make multiple ATM withdrawals if the amount exceeds the transaction-maximum, but doesn't exceed the daily maximum.

I have seen both methods

1) swipe ATM card and enter pin right there at the teller, not sure if this works for very large amount though (maybe it's the same daily limit as an ATM)

2) for very large amounts I went to the teller, filled in the slip (if you don't know the account number they fill it in. but you have to show ATM card). You also need ID. When I withdrew a very large sum (30k in cashier's checks, which I needed at closing) they branch manager to come double check Photo ID (driver's licenses). On several other occasion for large sum (but below 10k) the teller scrolled though my old statements looking at signatures on older checks to make sure it matches the signature on the withdrawal slip (that was in addition to photo ID).

make sure you get the cash in an envelope, and be alert of your surroundings as you leave the bank. I don't mean to be paranoid, just careful. Good luck

My teller skills have atrophied too, but last time I went in, I just said that I needed money, handed them the card and THEY filled out a withdrawn slip. I like that...

LOL Hal, I did the same thing at the Credit Union.

Just play dumb and they will take care of you. Start by handing them your library card.

If it is over $1000, they may ask you return in 30 minutes to 2 hours, and might want 24 hr. notice for more than $3000. Some bank branches where I used to live had been targets for bank robberies and the tellers were told to never have more than $2000 in the drawer.

I never use ATMs (nor drive-in windows, either). I like going inside and dealing face-to-face with folks. Getting to know the tellers can help in a variety of ways.

To get cash, simply write a check (you still have checks, right?) to 'Cash', sign it, endorse on the back, and hand to the teller. But these days, don't try this in a bank where you don't have an account. And if the teller doesn't know you, he may ask to see ID.
