I think it's really attractive, myself. We're considering planting some as a hedge on one side of our yard. It can be done responsibly so it doesn't spread, using underground barriers, and there are some recently imported varieties that clump more densely rather than spreading.

If it's not done right though, it's a real pain.

Fast, densely growing, outcompetes all other plants. What could possibly go wrong?

Not all bamboo is invasive. Unfortunately, running bamboo is often sold as clumping bamboo.

That's a lot of pesto.

Don't forget """Big Bambu"""

"""I didn't even use a conventional rod and reel. Instead, my weapon of choice was a 10-foot bamboo stick with heavy black Dacron line wrapped around the tip of it, a small lead weight and a tiny cheap hook.?Why didn't I use a regular rod and reel? Oh yeah, we had some at the farm that we used to fish Rice Lake for other species, but the bamboo stick was much better for fishing creeks for a very simple reason. Anyone who has ever tried to sneak up or down a small creek bank knows how frustrating it is when you're fighting your way through bushes and tree branches, getting your rod tip snagged up, cussing with every breath, sweating, trying to untangle your rod and line from the snags. And how do you swat those ever-present mosqitoes while both hands are busy doing the untangling ritual every few minutes??That's where The Big Bamboo came in.First of all, it was light to carry and the extra length allowed me to reach out to the opposite creek bank if I needed to. Better yet, you know those little log jams you know for sure are holding fish but you can't cast into because you'll get snagged in the wood for sure? No problem with The Big Bamboo. I simply reached out over the wood, picked an open hole then unwound the line until my bait entered the water. When a speckie hit, it was just a straight upward lift, then a swinging motion to flop it onto the creek bank. I often caught larger fish that way because they were untouched by other anglers who used conventional rods and reels at that time and couldn't present their worm or grasshopper offering where they wanted it to go. Ahhh, but the trusty "big bamboo" was a precise fish-catching weapon"""

I've got the clumping kind in two places. Nearest neighbors are too far away to bother. Looks great, especially near (but not too near) the Japanese maple....

I moved into a house a few years ago, the back 1/4 of the yard was overgrown with running bamboo...some one a few houses down had planted it years ago, it went crazy from there.

I spend months chopping, mowing and chain-sawing. Finally got it under control. We moved out last year, I went by this year after a wet winter...it's back!

I don't know what kind we have around here, but it sure isn't the useful "bamboo pole" kind of bamboo. It's just something that makes it hard to get thru so you can get to the river and fish.

Rolando,

You've described exactly the problem with bamboo. Some forms are considered an invasive species which can cause a great deal of trouble and, as you noticed, much be _very_ carefully controlled. Definitely would not be happy if one of my neighbors planted bamboo simply because I wouldn't trust them to control it properly.

The bamboo I have is non-running, and makes a nice hedge. It's been in the same place for 3 or 4 years now, and no runners anywhere. Several neighbors have some too, none of it appears to be the running kind. One tries to use it as a hedge in front of a large picture window in his bathroom, but another neighbor has reported walking by in the early morning and seeing him naked through the hedge...
