I keep finding more and more. I'm guessing I have 10-20 left. I didn't realize the drought in south Arkansas was that bad. I remember one year I thought most of the oak trees were dead because they turned brown in the summer and didn't turn colors in the fall, but in the spring they bloomed out like normal. I was hoping this would be the case with the dogwoods, but I guess not.

Is there anything dogwood wood is especially good for?

It turns nice on a wood lathe. I made several carving mallets out of a Dogwood that was taken down by
Hurricane Hugo many years ago and sold them at an Arts and Crafts show. It's a very dense wood.

Yes, dogwood is very dense, and good for several things. Since I don't have the time/tools/experience to carve things from all my dead dogwood, I can tell you, it is the BEST firewood I have ever used! Burns very hot, almost no smoke and makes good coals. It's definitely not the kind of tree you cut for firewood, but when it dies, well, use it!

I have a friend who makes wooden pens. I'll con him into cutting them. They are hell on a saw blade.

A month ago we were lamenting that our dogwood was dead. Then, last week it flowered!

A lot of the Dogwoods around here have died also.
