when I wake up from a dream, I remember details like phone numbers and addresses, name of people, color of objects, etc. but then a couple of hours later these memories start to fade.

I had a dream journal for a while and I used to be able to write almost a paragraph about some. I rarely remember anything since having problems with insomnia starting about 10 years ago.

There's some kind of natural suppression mechanism at work there. Try telling someone else about your dream while you still remember it. A week later they'll remember it, you won't.

Like kap, I seldom dream, but when I do dream, the memories fades very fast. The details fade literally within a minute of waking up.

I remember several dreams after waking up.

Many of them stick in my memory for several days afterwards. Some, I remember for years.

I suspect that the reason I remember my dreams so well is related to my lucid dreaming. I'm aware during my dreams and pay attention both as a viewer/director and as a character/actor.

Back and forth. I still remember a handful of dreams from throughout my life quite clearly. Had one -- and I have witnesses, per se, of the truth of this -- in early August 2005 that I was running across a bridge from my hometown of Metairie (just outside of New Orleans) and there was water everywhere, rushing over the edges of the bridge, threatening to inundate me and my family. I spoke to someone next to me, a being of light with a soft strong voice -- I said, that's it, it's the end, and the voice told me it was a beginning. For obvious reasons, that dream has stayed with me.

In more mundane matters, I've had recurring dreams about aliens (think H R Giger's alien, not visitors) but haven't had those in ages. And last night, I had a vivid dream that I was talking to Arturo Sandovahl about the merit's of Maynard Ferguson's commercial/acid jazz years.

My dreams are always blurry.

I think it's probably because I take off my glasses before I go to sleep.

Like most others here, I don't usually remember dreams beyond a few minutes after I awaken.

There are a few I remember forever. Other dreams, even when I make a conscious effort to try to remember them, just fade away.

For those who say they don't dream much, I'll bet they dream as much as anyone else but they just don't remember.

Last night I dreamed about baby armadillos in my house. Except that they were tiny; about the size of a pecan. And that they seemed to arrive on sort of a stalk, like cherry tomatoes. Cute little @#$%&.

That's pretty much it for me - a few of the recurring ones I can still recall at will.

One thing that seems weird to me is that many people claim that their dreams are NOT in color...

Some nights very clear.
Some nights not so clear.
Many a fun dream on a regular basis.

I still remember a few childhood nightmares I had when I was rationalizing my brother's collapse into his lifelong illness of epilepsy and cerebral palsy. They usually involved my sister and I fighting monsters that were swallowing him. Damn monsters always won, and I would wake screaming.

Of course sleeping in bunk beds with an epileptic was a shaky experience...

The dreams I can remember are usually bad ones: I'm drowning, I am helpless to defend a loved one, etc; the ones that wake me up. If I sleep thru it, I won't remember it. I had a really bad nightmare a few weeks ago; I told my wife about it, then explained I've been having it for twenty years. Right now, I can't remember what happens in it!

I used to have long complicated dreams, some of which I wrote down right after waking, so i remember those.
The problem i have now, with so many years of living and dreaming behind me, is that often I think I have a memory about something, but when i look closely I realize that what I think happened didn't and the supposed memory is actually a part of a forgotten dream sequence. It can be a little unsettling.

I actually had a dream that I remembered last night and it reminded me of this thread. I was a 'hero' warrior vaguely similar to Cmdr. Shepard in M.E., but it was a small association of interstellar races and not a huge group with a population in many trillions across thousands of planets. They had mutated their own races to create a handful of sport fighters that had most of the races special abilities, but they ended up much brighter than expected and had decimated the staff of the battle arena/space station. I noticed a predictable trait, similar to how A.I. in some games can be used against them, and used it to kill all the muties and ended up the hero.

I am never aware that I have dreamt.

Either I don't dream or I don't remember them at all.

Maybe a handful of times in my life I have a memory of a dream maybe a couple of seconds long and that is it.
