FU (with pics!) : 2ft x 2ft x 2ft planter box - how to join the 2x4s?

previous thread - [forums.macresource.com]

i'm quite proud of the result. no, i can't do anything about the building facades, doors, or trash cans.

the box with weather and gray as the plants grow in. as for the internals, i just went without corner posts. it was actually rather easy. also, the sidewalk isn't level so i installed feet at an angle. its extremely sturdy.

take that, concrete jungle!

Very nice, but get rid of those garbage cans which are detracting from your creation.

What are the plants?
Can't you put the garbage cans in the alley?

Why not build 3 more and set the trash cans down in them?

Nice job on the planter box.

Weeds in the sidewalk are growing well. You must have a green thumb.

I should say a little bit more about its construction.

the interior structure consists of 2 squares created from 2x4s. I joined the individual boards into a square using gorilla glue - being very careful to maintain a right angle. Its quite strong under some forces but not others. I used it to tack the pieces together so i could use long screws that hold the exterior board and the two internal 2x4s together. aside from my first round of gluing which resulted in some distinctly non square shapes, it was quite easy.

the feet are rather short pieces of 2x4 which are screwed into the lower 2x4 square. I placed one screw, verified the height and angle were appropriate and then added four more. its as solid as a rock.

nice. but I would stain the exterior. next time you build one, stain the boards before screwing them together, makes it easier overall. f

And the vertical boards-- are they 1x or 2x? I can't quite tell from the pic.
I've always heard it's good to let such things weather a bit before applying seal.
I've done my share of similar construction over the years (work benches, aquarium stands, containers) but I've never tried to do anything with any sort of decorative element to it-- nice work.

Do you have to get a permit of some sort to have a planter on city property ?

doesn't look like city property, probably a few feet in front of the house is considered part of the lot. sometimes the city will pave or cement right up to the doorway if there's nothing else there. at least they do around here.

I just reported it as "967"-- I'm sure they can figure out which street.
I put it in as "produce or fruit stand" since it seemed to be the closest choice.

they're 1x4s

I don't consider it decorative, just some careful thinking about how the corners and edges come together. But I do get a great deal of pleasure out of the fact that a passive glance reveals a plain square box but closer inspection shows some thought in how it comes together. some day, when my architect girlfriend isn't in school anymore, i'll have her help me. she's REALLY picky about details.

i spent quite a while thinking about the design of the box, not so much from an appearance standpoint but from a construction standpoint. it needed to be easy. still took quite a while to carefully attach all those panels.

Can you post the length and width? It would be fun to build the same one and post pics in the various contexts.

Nicely done! thumbs up

I won't criticize your work or entryway like some have already done, but I'm puzzled as to why your trash can lids have chains on them. dunno smiley

I could remove the weeds in the sidewalk but i chose not to. you don't see it in the photo but trash blowing down the street is a much bigger eyesore.

I'll post the build directions but it might take me a few days.
