Upgrade antenna on home wifi?

I've got marginal reception on the Verizon wifi router (Actiontec MI424). It comes with a 7db omni; I'm thinking of getting a cheap 9db omni, or a cheap 16 db yagi, or a cheap 16 db panel (all on ebay).

Any recommendations? Thanks!

Really into "cheap", aren't you!? How about spending enough to do the job right the first time. That's often the way to cure the problem permanently, and often ends up being the cheapest. You never have to visit the problem again.

actually, their router was pretty stable, but the WiFi did suck after 30' or so.

It's just a word....

We're moving soon, so I don't want to overinvest in a solving a problem that will likely go away in a month or two.

I would be inclined to move the current router around if I was moving soon. Location can make a significant difference.

The higher the gain the narrower the beamwidth, meaning a stronger signal but less overall coverage. If you need the signal in just one spot then yes the higher gain antenna may help.
