But there are counter pressures at work. Literally. Many hospitals are now refusing to hire people based on BMI.

congrats! thats very satisfying. i'm not sure if/when i'll make that jump. i'm at a good weight although cycling says i could lose a few. but the only thing that stops cycling from inducing body dismorphia is that your strength drops off if you starve yourself.

I'm nearing my 60th birthday, and wife and I decided we needed to get healthier before then (getting older + diabetes is damage enough). We both made some serious changes to our diet (south beach) and have been taking it off slowly and steadily for the past 2 years. I'm pleased to say I'm down about 95 lbs. (and my wife nearly as much). In fact I'm approaching the same weight when I was first married 39 years ago - and no longer the biggest guy in the room.

That said, it really saddens me to see all the morbidly obese people, especially the young teens.

Many? I know of only one, in Texas. They won't hire anyone with a BMI over 35, which is well past the definition of obesity.

BMI isn't the most valid measure. I weigh 153 lbs at 5'8", which is normal. If I ate dessert every night, and sugary cereal in the morning, my weight would go up to 165, and my BMI would cross into "overweight," which is true. On the other hand, if I went to the gym three or four days a week and worked out, my weight would go up to 165 within a year from packing on muscle. I've been there before, 165 pounds with very little body fat, which is about my max. That's not overweight.


Now, that hospital in Texas would still hire me. At 5'8", I wouldn't reach a BMI of 35 until I weighed 235 pounds. I can't imagine any way I would be 235 pounds and not have a serious health problem.

Let's hope that skin-tight clothing will no longer be in fashion in 2030. I don't care for that look even on the anorexic waifs for whom it was designed. Clothing items such as skin-tight jeans scaled up for severely overweight people are just plain unkind, like a snotty Fsck-You from the fashion industry.

BMI only provides a vague guide but its pretty accurate if you're not athletic. and most americans aren't (or so i've heard)

I think there are some significant regional variations. I don't see that many obese people around here, except when I go to the touristy parts of San Francisco, where there are often a shockingly large fraction of very large people (presumably from out of state) milling around.

I see moderately or very obese people every day, especially on mass transit (buses in particular). Some of them are fairly young.

Meanwhile, despite our mayor's supposed concern about rates of obesity and associated health care costs, and his push to require the display of calorie counts in certain restaurants, the city continues to fill up with godawful chain restaurants specializing in sugar and fat.

And every drug store carries at least as much junk food as health care products.

I thought that everyone who lives in San Francisco was from somewhere else.

Now if you're talking about the Gold Country...

To properly calculate your BMI, it needs to be done in a tank. If it's just a height/weight calculation, it's an estimate at best.
