Yups. It's a decent price. I saw a Samsung 5400 rpm drive on dealmac for $100.00. I'd pay the extra $10 for the faster drive. BUt, Id' check to see the reviews of the drive prior to buying it, just to make sure it's a well regarded model.

Yeah I picked up one for $80 as well. It turned out to much faster than I expected, great for backups over eSATA.

Its fascinating how HDD prices have stagnated. I have 4x 1.5TB + 2x 2TB drive in my readynas. I'd like to upgrade the drives but I'd like to see prices fall on 3TB drives.

The prices are starting to come back to earth... that's a SATA II drive btw, there are SATA III drives out there w/in a few bucks if that makes any difference. Good price in today's market for 7.2K RPM. Next week ? ? ?

Assuming you don't have a SATA III controller for the 3.5" drive, you should be golden.

In an external case, it won't matter one bit. SATA II is 3Mb/s and SATA III is 6Mb/s. FW800 is 0.8 Mb/s.

In addition, all SATA speeds are back & forth compatible, slowing down to the slowest interface speed.

I am so glad I got four 3TB drives for $85 each right after the whole flooding thing happened. I think 2TB drives were dipping down to around $70 for the WD Green drives around then too. I wonder if/when we'll get back down that low.

Heh. Once I max out my 2tb RAID, I'll be looking at replacing them with 3's.

Never underestimate the predictability of stupidity

You realize that because this is just a SATA II drive, that if you connect it to a SATA I port, it will never
be able to reach its full capacity of delivering 350MB/sec to your computer. It will be limited to just 187.5MB
per second.

It’s possible that if you apply additional voltage that you might be able to get it to perform closer to its SATA III brother,
which can deliver data at the full 6Gbit, or 750MB per second. But at least you can rest assured, based on
the SATA II specifications, that 4 of them in a RAID will deliver a blistering 1.5GB per second to your MacPro
if connected to the individual controllers inside the MacPro case, removing any need to ever consider
an SSD - why would you, when you could have 2TB of striped hardware delivering an incredible data-flow
faster than your Xeons would know what to do with it!

Just be glad the buffer is only 32MB and the spin at just 5400rpm. If this were a 64/7200, four drives like
that have been known to require the Promise Thunderbolt container, delivering data at the unspecified rate
of “SATA IV” - which obviously is an incredible 3GB/sec.

In fact, with another set of 4, just like it as back-up, you could duplicate those drives in just 11 minutes!

Why just the other day… I was thinking about, how if all the little ARM and PowerPC embedded chips that
are under my dash were on the SATA IV bus, delivering data to the ECM at .00001 mph less than the speed
of light, I’d be willing to bet that my overall horsepower would jump from the current high end CAN rate
developed by Bosch (a blistering 62.5KByte per second) to the heftier phantom SATA IV rate, that my top
speed (due to the efficiency enhancements in torque and horsepower, caused by the exacting fuel/air
mixtures) would suddenly go from 118 mph to 5,600,000 mph!! — a full 48,000 times faster
than the current OBD 2006 spec (all things being equal) !!

The great part is…my highway miles per gallon would go from 33 to 1,584,000 miles per gallon!!

Of course that wouldn’t be true at the wide open throttle speed of 5,600,000 mph. It might drop to
under 1 million MPGs, but that just might be worth it for one of those late night trips when you need
to go to the moon, come back, realize you left your wallet on the surface - you speed back there, and
are still able to get back just in time before MTV’s Prolapsed Rectum starts - that’s just one of those
shows (in a Winnebago) you just don’t want to miss!

And you could record it too, on those fancy 64/7200 2TB drives… but just remember: SATA IV has a connector
that’s a little different than SATA III. It’s 13 miles wide, but only 400,000 pins vertical. So be sure you have the right connector!
