google earth

So I want to make a poster size print of an area and I go to google earth. It will let me print the entire area but only at low resolution.

At the suggestions of someone here I zoomed in, saved a bunch of images, and stitched them together. Better quality but very difficult and time consuming. Also the perspective changes as you move on the map so things don't always line up exactly right.

So I'm wondering just why google has chosen not to allow high resolution printing? I don't even want to print it myself, I want to have a service do it and charge me. It seems like google could earn some coin by sending the high res picture to a service and taking a cut. Very frustrating.

I'm told I can do what I want with google maps pro but it is $400.

Go back to our earlier discussion. I mentioned several good ways to do what you want, none of them involving Google Earth. Google Maps doesn't display the imagery quite the same way, and will stitch together just fine. So will planimetric orthoimagery from the other sources I mentioned.

Tell me the area you want to cover and I will see if I can do it pretty easily for you.

sounds like Mr. D is more knowledgeable than me, but as he says, you should be able to find some orthos of what you are after from free sites. have you tried [1.usa.gov]

nevermind: Mr. D linked to better sites. try those first.

Thank you for making me go back and re-read that thread. I've been exploring the options suggested. As an added note I'm trying to get the satellite image because it displays the walking/biking paths as compared to a pure contour map. Here is a link to the area I'm trying to work with.
[maps.google.com]

[www.arcgis.com] - It seemed to have a good picture but I couldn't figure out how to get it off the website and onto my computer.

[yakimap.com] - These pictures look the best of what I have seen. This might work but I'd have to go through the stitching process again.

[maps.nokia.com] - Pictures were really fuzzy compared to the others.

[www.bing.com] - Wow, best maps so far. I don't see any way to save the maps though so it would be back to zoom, take a screen shot, and stitch together.

National Map Online - Exceptionally hard to use, pictures were blurry

Out of these options I think the yakimap or bing maps were the best. I'd just have to go through the stitching process again. Mr Downtown if you have a better way to do it keep poking me with a stick so I can learn. Thanks! burnout smiley

Wouldn't this service save you a lot of time and trouble?

I can also see what imagery is available for download through the USGS Seamless Viewer or ArcGIS online, but you'd need to tell me the exact northwest and southeast corners of the area you want.
