Yes, it's real. I use similar stuff at work. We can take a customer's CAD drawing and make mating parts for the stuff that we make for them. Or, take a competitor's part and reverse engineer it. Neat stuff.

First thing I would do is have the printer make a new replacement printer, and send the original back :-)

If you read the article he says they make a plastic part and send it out to make a casting from it.

And they first make sure that the plastic part fits before sending it out.

I wonder if we'll start seeing shops with these start springing up a for walk-in service sort of like Kinko's.

It would certainly make sense, in fact might be a good business opportunity. I can remember when laser printers were too expensive for most households and small businesses. We used to carry floppies with files to be printed to the copy shop that had a laser printer and pay for each page.
