I have some weighty cookbooks that it is impossible to scan recipes from. I don't want to take the books into the kitchen because I'm messy and would get them full of what I'm baking.

I have a feeling hand helds are not what they are cracked up to be but just thought I'd ask.

I started taking digital pictures of stuff like that in February of 2002.
Print out what's needed on the laser printer.
Works like a charm.

It's been ages since I used one. They work, but you end up stitching the images together with the little hand held ones. PITA.

plop the book on a scanner or even easier yet :

Just take a picture of the page with your ipad.

Google works best for me. iPad2. Giving away about 50 fine cook books.

If you're talking about the "wand" kind of scanners... I got one for my mom last christmas. It's a VuPoint model (model number escapes me).

Works pretty well, but like all hand scanners is persnickety in the speed at which you roll it over the page.

You can take it's little memory card out and put it in an SD card adapter, and attach it to your iPad using the iPad Camera Connector kit too... (which is why my mom got it... she wanted "on the road" scanning capability with her iPad.).

Well, I will never give away my cookbooks even tho I do use the net. I read cookbooks like dime novels, over and over again.

Aren't they a less exciting once you know how they end?

Here's what I do-

Find a copy center that has a "guillotine"--a device that slices off the binding.

Scan the de-bound book.

Have the cookbood rebound with a spiral binding.

Done it for a dozen books--works really well for me.

I've tried it and it doesn't work for me.

I just put the book on the floor, and brace myself against the wall, then take as many shots as it takes to get a clearly focused picture. Clean up the edges on the computer before printing as needed. Pretty straight forward. Would use the iPad method if I had one... but, I have put a few things on the HP Touchpad the last few months.

sounds interesting. I have a spiral binder. Don't know if our Kinkos has the other device but will check.
