Alternatives to iMovie that aren't awful?

I finally got a camera mount for my car and an adequate camera for said car.

So, I went on a great drive today, and I'd like to do some splicing. I've got about an hour of 1080i footage. I popped it into iMovie and regardless of what settings I wanted (original or small), it wanted 10 hours to import it.

I found VLMC, and it looks promising, but it is *really* alpha software.
I used to have FCE 2.0 from back when I had my PowerMac, and I don't really want to fish the license back out and attempt to run it under Rosetta...

Any recommendations? I really just want to do some simple splicing, captioning, and a soundtrack...

Thanks!

If you find one let me know.
I am not pleased with iMovie so far.
Maybe i should RTFM…

Be here now. Be someplace else later. Is that so complicated?

There seems to be a bunch of X11 ones, which I may try at some point. I don't mind compiling software from source.

But, there's also a 30 day trial on Final Cut, which I'll at least try before going to the X11/Linux ones.

I think all of the options import in real time, so you will have to face that no matter which you choose.

he has only one hour worth of 1080i, but the import takes 10x longer...

Let it import overnight. It will likely be faster than 10 hrs anyway but still plan on five hrs.
