Strangely, Safari 5.1.7 did not appear in my Software Update query, so I tracked it down on Apple's website, downloaded it and it;s now installed.

Any idea why it now takes a message from the Philippines to get update alerts?

Are there reasons why the update wasn't announced and why I shouldn't have installed it on my MacPro/Lion?

Seems to work okay????

I saw it this via the Software Updater . . .
I am in OS X 10.6.8 SL.

Apple releases Safari 5.1.7, Snow Leopard updates, and more.

As I said, there was no indication of an update when I ran Software Update in OS 10.7.4.

When I looked it up on Apple's website, it indicated that Safari 5.1.7 was compatible with Lion.

I just ran two separate speed tests and both were half as fast as when I tested with Safari 5.1.4, just before I downloaded and installed the new version.

Now I'm sorry that I upgraded. sad smiley

[www.bandwidthplace.com] 31.47Mbps download speed now and before 5.1.7 install.

15.47 Mbps on first test right after install.

[testmy.net] Your Speed :: 29.4 Mbps on last test, but was half of that right after the install.

I'm baffled!

I do have Cox Cable's highest speed residential internet service, which received a speed boost just recently.

Both my Macs are running like Bandits . . .
MBP with OS X Lion 10.7.4
And iMac with OS X 10.6.8

Both running their own version of Safari 5.1.7

You likely have other issues Gene.

I don't think that there's an issue with Safari 5.1.7 after all.

I'm pretty sure that the download speed difference had to do with the use of "cable internet."

I've learned that from one minute to the next, download speeds can vary a great deal due to a number of factors, including how many neighbors are using internet access on the same node.

I only became suspicious because the speed dropped so drastically when I rechecked right after the Safari upgrade.

As far as I can tell, there's no problem now, but I do still wonder why the upgrade didn't show up in Software Update. dunno smiley

As N-OS X-tasy! would say, "it is what it is!"

I'm curious as to why the Safari 5.1.7 update didn't show up in Gene's Software Update... it popped up in 10.6.8 and 10.7.3 here a few days ago, but haven't upped Lion to 10.7.4 yet, so maybe there was a temporary delay between 10.7.3/10.7.4 ? ? ?
