Dehumidifier is on the blink after 17 years, any suggestions on a new one?

Guess I can't complain about it after all it did last 15+ years. The fan runs but no one is home. I noticed the other day
that the basement seemed to be getting a bit damp and musty, so I check and there's no water coming out of theĀ
drain hose and none in the pan. It's a Chambers brand with just a simple knob. It appears everything but commercial
grade units have electronic controls. This one at Best Buy seems to get good reviews:

It's possible. I priced a compressor, if that's the problem, it's over $200. If I could get someone to check
the freon for a reasonable price that would be good. The steel ends on the coils are very rusty. It's
definitely seen better days.

Nobody makes a good dehumidifier. Old ones ran quietly and ran forever. New ones are noisy and last about three years. They do have pumps on them though, so there's that.

I think I'll give my neighbor a call, he owns his own HVAC company, and see if he'll take a look at it.

This one looks like a nice one but $550 it a bit rich for my blood, it actually looks a lot like my Chambers.

Our present one is a Whirlpool model AD70USSI1. It has been working well for several years now. It replaced another type, whose name I can't see (it's in the basement, but buried), which ran but stopped dehumidifying.

The Whirlpool box says "Extremely wet area." Our basement isn't, for the most part, but a little overkill never hurts.

Thanks MrLynn.

It looks like the biggest complaint about the Frigidaire is getting it to drain properly through a
garden hose like we use to basement floor drain.

We don't have a basement drain, but I have mine upon blocks atop a cabinet, with the hose going into a trap and then into the Christmas tree.

agree smiley

I think a dehumidifier should only make about as much noise as a refrigerator. But it seems like anything commonly available these days is noisy as all get out.

I got a Comfort Aire 50 pint that is the loudest appliance I have ever heard, short of maybe a blender. You could easily hear it upstairs anywhere in the house. God help you if you wanted to spend any time in the basement.

Then I got a GE 30 pint that is a lot more quiet but still too loud.

Well we picked up one of the Frigidaire's at Best Buy today, I'll see how it does. We have 45 days to return
so that should be sufficient to see if it's going to dry the basement out or not.

I talked to the neighbor he said if it's 17 years old count your blessings and pop for new one.
