Have been setting up this new Pioneer AV Receiver. VSX 821k. I have added optical Audio cables.

Somewhere during the build, I now have when I change the channel on the TIVO feeding the Receiver with optical Audio, and HDMI, I now get a popping cracking noise when I change channels.

Is this normal, or is there something I can do to correct?

Not normal. What happens if you bypass the receiver and just run the HDMI with embedded audio (or with separate optical) straight to the TV?

why are you using optical AND HDMI cables?

Yeah, I would check the settings under wherever you have that source set to the receiver (i.e., TV, DVR, whatever). The Pioneers let you manually change where the audio is coming from. See if it's set to Digital Audio (Optical) and not HDMI (I'm guessing).

Although honestly, if the audio is coming over HDMI, why even bother when the optical cables?

Seriously, HDMI audio is good? Or in other words better than optical?

I believe I originally had it set to hdmi for audio , and it did t have that problem I think.

So when do I use optical audio?

Will set it back to hdmi and see what happens

Popping gone with HDMI chosen as audio, now surround isn't pronounced, but working on that
