SSD prices tumble again!

I like the Samsung 830 series and through Newegg, you can pick up the 128GB model for $110 shipped:

Use code EMCNEJB27 to get this price.

If you would like a larger drive (and are not scared off by OCZ or rebates), here is a 240GB SSD that is about $160 after rebate ($20) + code ( HARDOCPX516A ):

Another polular model is the Crucial M4 256GB, and it can be picked up for $200 delivered, either here [www.tigerdirect.com] or here [www.ebay.com]

I am a little hesitant to buy ANY SSD these days, as a few days later they will be less $$.

Ok, then just keep waiting another day, and another day, and another... And you'll simply NEVER get an SSD.

My $209, 240GB SSD is still happy...
Perhaps experiencing a tinge of jealousy, but still happy, because it's able to experience its feelings by having already been installed in its SATA III, 6 Gigabit, MBP hard drive bay awhile ago, rather than still waiting in its box on a store shelf somewhere, anticipating its next price reduction. Yep; happy, happy, happy, it is.

That comment was strictly tounge in cheek. Last week alone I bought 4 of the M4 256GB SSDs for clients at $220 and that was a good price then.

If you need something, get it now.

I kept waiting on 2TB drives to drop in price. Finally I went ahead and bought. Good timing too. A couple months later the prices all went way up.

I keep thinking I'll get one for my 2006 Macbook (I have one in my MacPro). But I hardly ever use it since I got the iPad.

rz;
Been thinking the same thing... my old Core Duo Macbook was going to get a "mid-life upgrade" with a new drive or SSD, and a new battery... but I haven't used it in months, so I've held off...

If, however, the prices for SSD's drop just a LITTLE more, it's going to be very tempting to go ahead and upgrade the Macbook!

if prices on ssds drop enough they could breath a fair amount of life into older machines. biggest problem would be software support

What difference would that make now?
I remember when Sun first ran the "MAE" Mac Application Environment on its high end workstations and it processed too fast for some programs that did adhere 100% to Apple's programming guidelines, and that MAE actually exposed several previously unknown flaws in some mainstream apps, but nowadays, why would a faster drive be of concern...?

Doesn't 10.6.8 run on most Intel Macs? Lots of support left on that generation hardware.

I dropped a generic SSD that I've had for a while (it didn't work out in my main machine, for reasons too boring to go into) in my wife's old Mini (which started life as a lowly Core Solo, and had been upgraded to a Duo 1.66) this afternoon, along with a RAM plus-up and a "re-purposed" 2.33 C2D. That sucker is born again... more than twice as fast as it used to be.

Absolutely.

And if one were to put an SSD in a Macbook, one might find that they use the Macbook a little more with it's markedly improved boot time.

For me, the biggest thing an SSD does is imbue appliance-like speed to a Mac device, making it feel less like a computer. Even though I'm not working with huge files, the speed increase affects simple things like reading email, launching an app, opening a file-- all the things people said would never really get faster by throwing CPU cycles at them.

Booting up doesn't really feel like booting up. It's a little closer to turning on the radio or TV. (Unless yours still runs on tubes.)

Will, that's a terrific upgrade. New machine for sure.

Ram is spot on. I put an ssd plus data doubler in my son's MacBook. Made a huge difference. He's no longer complaining about speed - even compared to our i-series iMac with 12 gb ram.
