Ancient PC Software Question. Cool Edit 2000.

I use an ancient PC software program to edit long audio files--Cool Edit 2000. It's 11-12 years old, and I know that there are better solutions, but I actually know this program and don't do enough of this kind of audio editing to legitimize buying new software and learning to use it. Garageband completely mystifies me. Sad, I know.

A nagging question though.

When playing an audio file in this program, after a few moments it always stops playing and reverts back to the start point of the most recent time I've clicked play.

Is there a software setting I could look into to make the program simply keep playing until I stop it?

Any thoughts on the subject appreciated.

Not knowing the program, but often there is some sort of setting for a 'window' width that lets you define "Play next 10 seconds" or so. Perhaps that's the problem. In Windowsy programs, there is also often a 'marquee selection' option that allows you to select the whole track.

So is this a new issue or something you have just been dealing with for the last decade? Assuming you can see the whole waveform on the screen at once then it should play that whole region unless you have an out point or loop setting turned on.

OTOH, Audacity is free and not too hard to figure out- [audacity.sourceforge.net]

Agree with Mikebw. I used this program regularly several years ago at work although we were editing PCM files. I just downloaded the program and installed it on Parallels Win 7. A 3 min and a 5 min mp3 play without any problem - even looping. I do have the entire waveform showing in the window. Talk about Déjà vu.

Check to see that you don't have an entry in the "End" field down at the bottom right.

I loved Cool Edit 2000 and Cool Edit Pro.

For the playing issue, just highlight (select all) of the wave and then play...it should always play in its entirety.

Just so you know, Adobe bought them (Syntrillium Software) out years ago and turned it into Adobe Audition. It is pretty much still the same program you know and love, but with some extra enhancements.

...if you need to upgrade in the future, perhaps just grab the 1st, 2nd, or 3rd version of Adobe Audition.
