Wireless doorbells

Does anybody here have any experience with these things? I went to Lowe's and installed the one brand they carried. The stated range (up to 100 feet) was off by an order of magnitude.

Home Depot had different brand, but I'm not really in the mood to return yet-another-opened-package for a refund.

A recommended brand/model would be appreciated.

Pass along ther recommendation if you get one. I've futzed w/ these things for 5 - maybe 6 - years. Range is WAY understated, and signal seems to have a hard time penetrating walls, furniture, young children, large dogs - just about anything between transmitter and receiver.

I bought a brass knocker.

after our wired doorknob stopped working ( I replaced everything but the transformer) we got a wireless one which worked ok until it didn't. It just stopped working one day. Fresh batteries all around and still nothing. Now people just knock. I guess I should just replace the old transformer and see if I can get our wired one working again.

We had one that never seemed to work consistently.
Then I bought a Honeywell and it works very well

Kap,

I've had a few of them. All makes and models. All mediocre at best. A knocker is the only thing that works reliably.

I've got one, and it works fine, but there's very little distance between the doorbell and the receiver unit-- which is intentional on my part, because I don't want to be woken up or bothered every time the door rings, and it's loud enough that I can easily hear it from three rooms away. I got mine at Lowes too. The only slight annoyance with mine is that the battery can lose contact in the bell unit, so I had to bend out the contact pins a bit to make it have a more snug fit, which seems to have worked fine.

I have on off the shelf at home depot. Don't remember the brand. My needs were not great; the receiver is probably 25 feet from the transmitter. It worked fine for 4 years, after which the transmitter battery died, but it was easily replaced.

I actually would really like a wireless doorbell that allows you to provide your own 'ring' via mp3 or aiff file. Does such an animal exist? I know exactly what i want my doorbell to be, and have dreamed of it for many years....

Because we have our office/laundry/library one one side of the house and a heavy door in between, we bought a Honeywell like Bruceko recommends. Ours has a flashing light also. The batteries have lasted over two years ("C" cells) and can be adjusted for loudness.
The light function is helpful when the TV sound is blasting.

Good thread. My experience has been poor also-- will prioritize Honeywell next time around.

Not until i get a link to such a device and can make it a reality! tongue sticking out smiley

(It's not really anything terrifically clever, but i know it would make me laugh hysterically EVERY time the doorbell's rung... And it would make the neighbors wonder about me even more than they already do. nuts smiley )

i've had this one for over a year with no problems. also a Honeywell. the distance from door to bell isn't that large so i can't answer to the range factor.
