The Dork Report: your opinion of low cut men's dress socks
Posted by: Ammo
Date: May 22, 2012 09:41PM
I realize this is not one of life's big problems, but I have been wondering about this.

Recently I found some very nice wool-blend dress socks at a reasonable price. However, they are low cut style, like the type you might wear with athletic shoes. They look quite nice with dress pants, until you sit down and cross your legs. When that happens, the skin between the top of the sock to the cuff of the pant shows. I don't know why, but this kind of bothers me; I'm not sure if it looks OK, or if it is the epitome of dorkiness. Perhaps I am being overly sensitive, but my kids have judged me thus in the past, and I'd like to break the pattern.

Are these kind of socks in style this days? So far, I have seen only one other guy wearing them.

Get new kids. Wear socks with sandals. Wear plus-fours with short socks. Be cavalier about your footwear!

I wear the knee-highs for important meetings, job interviews, that kind of thing. Otherwise, they're too uncomfortable for everyday wear.

I wear low-cut socks most of the time with dress pants.

Short black socks are for parochial school kids who also wear ugly wool shorts, twill blazers and ties.

Why would anyone wear them when you can wear perfectly good regular socks?

Back when I wore business dress, I'd wear 'over-the-calf' socks and got use to them. Too use to them because after a time they killed off hair follicles pretty much from the knee down.

Made beach visits a bit different. To this day my slightly hirsute 17-year old can't understand why my calves don't look anything like his.

the rage for 13-17 year olds is black calf high (about 4"winking smiley with vans/nike/whatever and shorts.

just visit the local mall, you should see plenty.

and to answer the original question -- you are totally fashion faux paux right now -- no way should you wear short sock with slacks,

I cringe when I see someone's white leg on a TV talk show. I'm always talking in my head to the cameraman, "Pull up! Pull up!"

Was that in response to my post? I think it's a bit non-sequitur... I didn't write about what's popular.

I can't stand 'em. It was a big thing in photo spreads and fashion shows a couple years ago, pants hemmed high and no visible socks. It's not supposed to be dorky, it's supposed to be too cool for school. But it's dorky.

That's a lot of pesto.

Ah... so THAT explains why my calves are hairless!

Why are you concerned about this? What the hell does it matter? Wear traditional socks and get on with your life.

Am I the only one who remembers the "Miami Vice" look with the shoes with no socks at all ? And those linen suits, the Ferrari, and whatnot ?

That reminds me. I need to get that linen suit and Ferrari out of the closet and take them to Goodwill.

yup, the low sock thing is dorky in that Merv Griffin talk-show sort of way. I used to always think that when I was a kid and would see someone on a talk show with really short black socks. weird.

....uh, they actually make those for the warmer weather......that way you won't go "barefoot" and having no socks at work in the summer is fine......are they "low cut" nor the "no show".......the "low cut" might look a bit funny....better to get the "no show' ones....but if you are daring.....wear what you want.....who cares what others think....

And this is why kids will ALWAYS be embarrasses by their parents.

Part of me wants to say "wear what you want", but then I think about older men who wear knee-high dress socks with shorts. That's just wrong. And someone needs to tell teenagers and Germans that wearing socks with sandles is wrong too.

You might want to reconsider that position:
