[driving] swing that big mini-van around that corner!

doncha love when people driving normal sized cars - even small cars - veer into oncoming lanes just to take a right turn. man, it's got to be a lot of work driving that big rig Odyssey! wouldn't want to actually have to turn that wheel now, wouldja?

(same is true for people taking a left who can't be bothered to actually turn the wheel but would prefer to just tug on it, so they can make a 45 rather than a 90 degree turn.)

Lack of familiarity with the vehicle's turning radius. I'll do that myself sometimes when I'm slotting into a tight parking space, but never on the road.

my other car is a semi

must be holding a $75.00 glass of champagne in the hand that's not holding the phone to the ear.
kinda hard to steer like that and not spill a drop

maybe there's a blubbber restriction behind the wheel

I thought that was just a Wisconsin thing. I have witnessed some of the worst driving habits since moving here 15 years a go. Left turns are made by pulling into the oncoming lane for a hundred feet or so before turning.

and when they swing into a parking lot into YOUR lane, they glare at you because you are in their way.

One of my favorite irritations is the guy who quickly pulls out in front of you causing you to hit the brake so you won't pile into him, even though you are the LAST car in the line of traffic and there is no one in sight behind you.

Kind of along the same lines are the people that pull up to and stop ON the white line at a light. So when you are turning left against them you HAVE to swing out wide or you'll hit them.

If you hate all these actions, pick up a white or black Crown Victoria for your daily driver. Bonus points if it has the spotlight. Everyone stays out of your way.

Especially if you buy an old police cruiser!

yeah, I hate that too. Had a young lady do something like that to me a couple years ago. Early on a Sunday morning (maybe 9am), I'm driving down the middle lane of a six-lane road (3 lanes in each direction). Nobody in front of me or behind me in any of the lanes for probably at least half a mile. She pulls out from a side street, RIGHT INTO MY LANE! So much so that I had to slam on my brakes and swerve into one of the other lanes to avoid plowing into her.

We always called that a "farmer turn". Nothing against farmers, but referring to how they needed to make wide right turns driving tractors and other farm equipment on the roads. Of course, some of them (usually the older ones) would carry this over to their day-to-day driving as well.

A couple days ago, I came pretty close to having a brush with a county maintenance van (not an Odyssey, but still a "regular" van). Four lane (two each way) city street. I was in the left lane, about half his length back. He decided to do a farmer turn to the right.. I had to slam on my brakes and swerve (lucky there was no oncoming traffic) to avoid being hit.

As far as the turning into the wrong lane thing, that's par for the course around here. Conservatively, about 80% of the drivers in my town turn into the absolute farthest lane possible. Seems like that's just how it's done. Oncoming traffic, turning to go the same direction on a three or four lane street will wait for each other, so they can both turn into their respective farthest lanes. Unbelievable.
