Interesting article about how to limit the amount of personal information that is gathered about you.

My question is who is allowed to read your email? Wouldn't that be akin to opening your snail mail?

"There are no secrets online. That emotional e-mail you sent to your ex, the illness you searched for in a fit of hypochondria, those hours spent watching kitten videos can all be gathered to create a defining profile of you."

There is no such thing as privacy on the internet. Everything to know about you is already available for free, or for sale by the companies that were supposed to safeguard it. Since these companies also run the government don't expect any changes.

The 21st century is a 'post privacy world'. Deal with it, or stay off the grid. And throw away your 'loyalty cards', credit cards, bank account, etc. Accept only cash, pay with only cash.

I guess it all depends on how one defines "privacy". I figure things I do in public - eg what I buy, where I buy it, where I drive... isn't really "private" information to begin with. What I do in private - eg, inside my house - I don't specifically want people to be able to access. Aggregate information that is not personally identifiable (eg cookies) is not something that bothers me.

I think the whole EU cookie law just shows how technically challenge their lawmakers are. They might as well classify CPU manufactures as religious organizations because they run on voodoo.

What's apathetic about it? If you don't care who knows what, you don't care. But like Mavic said, "what's privacy?" Information where people can actually "do" you, like credit card numbers, ssi numbers? Or just somebody knowing your name, who you are, where you live and what you do? You can't live if you're overly paranoid.

Have YOU ever tried to put a cat back in a bag? Believe me, I've tried, and it's NOT easy going! smiling bouncing smiley

Exactly correct - but this is what bothers people the most...

I'm a simple person. I don't pretend to be anyone else, and I feel it's ok to be responsible for what I do in this world.

I don't post anything on Facebook I wouldn't want anyone to see, I'm ok with people seeing me go into a store in person or online, and I answer when people call me by my real name.

Do I want people to know about any health issues I or anyone in my family might have? No. Do I want burglars to know when my family is out of town so they can rob my house? No.

Privacy is all relative.
