Followup to slashed thumb...

Current state of healing is here (BW warning): [img10.imageshack.us]

totally healed up, but still a scar... I've been using those OTC scar strips, but not sure how well this has been working. Any better suggestions on how to minimize the scar? Has anyone here used Mederma, etc.?

Stop biting your nails!

Not sure there's a whole lot more you can do for the scar.

are you still worried about your hand modeling career?

As a guy that worked as a short order cook for several years, that's nothin' - quit worrying about it.

It's not done healing yet.

I believe in the original thread I recommended liberal use of aloe vera. *Real* aloe vera, not the crap "aloe vera" cream available at Walgreens and its ilk. Real aloe vera works magic during the healing process.

About a decade ago I gave myself a very lovely second-degree burn on the back of my right hand. I was boiling water in a teapot; the pot had just started to whistle when I absentmindedly (i.e. stupidly) placed the back of my hand directly above the opening in the teapot valve where the steam comes out. I'm talking *directly* above the opening, where the steam has not yet begun to condensate and is still at a full 212 degrees F. I pulled my hand back immediately, but of course the damage was done: a quarter-sized section of skin has been completely scalded away and was hanging limply from my hand. Ouch.

After running cold water on the wound for about 10 minutes, I went out to our garden, where numerous aloe vera plants were growing. I broke off a section of one leaf and applied the sap from the leaf directly to the wound.

I don't remember how many times a day or for how many days I applied aloe vera during the healing process, but the final result is that I experienced *no* scarring at the injury site. None at all. I sought no medical treatment for the injury and, besides application of the aloe vera, administered no other treatment on my own.

I used to be skeptical about the claims made about the healing abilities of aloe vera, but no longer.

That's no scar.

The red will fade with time.

I don't bite my nails, thankyouverymuch. grinning smiley

And yeah, my hand modeling career is in ruins. I tried using potholders for the last several years, but that grab with the steam iron just took its toll.

I'll continue using the scar strips, I guess... though I'm not hopeful it'll improve much in appearance. Edit: I'll try the aloe... not much to lose.

Time. It takes months for the full healing process to occur.

Oh, and by the way that is not much of a scar....

Not sure why the abuse is necessary, but I agree that the redness will diminish with no further intervention. I'd be interested to see what effect Aloe Vera may have, based on NOX'ty's rec.

Photo doesn't do it justice, it's VERY obvious/noticeable and people who have seen me without a bandaid on top of it have asked me what's happened. I think it's because I am very fair-skinned, so the redness is very obvious.

You haven't been wearing your oven mitt have you? Otherwise it would have healed nicely with no scarring.

The actual scar under the redness looks pretty subtle. Once the redness fades, the scar will be pretty much invisible. Patience grasshopper...

btfc right about viatmin e. Puncture a vitamin and spread the good accordingly. You could also break off a bit of an aloe plant and apply it's goo directly to the wound.

You won't even notice in 3 months.

My wife would laugh if she saw that picture - and tell me to put a bandaid on it and get back to doing dishes!

Agreed. You might try making it bigger so it looks more like the real thing. Use an axe.
