More school administrator idiocy

[moms.today.msnbc.msn.com]

A high school freshman was suspended for five days after she created an anti-bullying video and Facebook page about a fictional girl who commits suicide says she tried to explain her work to school officials to no avail.

The six-minute video was for a class at Longwood High School in Middle Island, N.Y. The assignment was to create a project about an important issue. The girl did hers on bullying.

A parent grew concerned after seeing the page but failing to see the disclaimers that the page was fake and for a school project.

School officials suspended the girl for five days claiming the situation caused a disruption.

IDIOTS! - I swear do they ever think of anything beyond punishment.

You can tell a lot about a woman by her hands...
- For example, if they are wrapped around your throat she's probably slightly upset.

Maybe they should have punished the parent for being a dumbass.

This is the price we pay for having schools "monitor" students outside-of-school behavior.
And it's just going to get worse!

Zero tolerance equals Zero brains and Zero compassion.

Thank you local , state, and federal governments.

you DO realize that the principals and educators are just enforcing the laws as they are required to by lawmakers whose exposure to schools was typically limited and long forgotten ?

I think I see her next school project about an important issue.

Yep. I'm waiting for this anti-bullying fad to pass, but apparently it's too much to ask people to realize that bullying exists throughout the world at every age. Bullying isn't going away. How people react to bullying is what should be taught.

School boards did this. My dad served for a very long time and was on the board when they passed the zero tolerance on weapons. But he'd tell you that they never, ever, intended it to be used like it has. You have spineless administrators who do not want to make decisions based on each case. Or in many cases incapable of making decisions.

In this instance, the admins were and are morons.

I was afraid that this was what was happening. School administrators could exercise their judgment but I wouldn't be surprised if many take the easy way out and just fall back on existing zero tolerance rules.

There definitely should have been a disclaimer in the video explaining much more. If this was for a project why make a fake Facebook page... How did a parent see it? There is more to the story than was presented.

Jessica should concentrate more on her English skills than making a video about bullying.

I agree with MAVIC bullying isn't going away.

I think the 400 lb gorilla in the room is that these administators are reacting to public sentiment. We have met the problem...

The admins made a much bigger disruption than the girl. Heck the parent who called made the disruption. This girl should not be penalized and get an A. She's 15 for cripes sake.

??? I found the video to be quite well done and articulate. Jessica Barba has an excellent sense of story, and the directorial drive to corral others into acting for her, even some adults.

In response to the above complaints:
1) There is a disclaimer at both the beginning and the end of the video saying that it is fictional.
2) There are some MINOR issues with the mechanics of written English, simple to fix in a second draft. Imagine the text as a voice-over, and it works about 95% fine as Standard English.

I did pick up on a couple of issues that I think need revision, and I would have made the following suggestions if I were the teacher who was giving feedback on this piece:

3) The font size in the text often varies in inconsistent ways. In some places it is too small, and in other places the variation does not seem to make sense. Review the whole piece and ask whether the font size does what it is supposed to do in every frame.
4) The segment showing Hailey and her mother has a continuity problem. Since Haily was 3 years old when her mother died, and scenes between Hailey and her mother would need to show a young child, not Haily at her current age. Is there another way you can do a scene with Hailey and her mother that would avoid this problem?
5) Have you started planning your next piece yet?
