And probably a 3.5" desktop drive, not a 2.5" laptop drive…

I've heard those hybrid drives don't really save much time over other drives. Can anyone confirm/deny?

THIS drive has never been sold for less than this - EVER - so it's a very worthy deal

That is utter BS and good luck finding even a 5400RPM drive NEW for $80 these days... go to newegg, look up laptop drives, select 500GB and sort by price. The CHEAPEST of all is $75.

Oh, I'm not interested... I've got plenty of drives. But I thought I had read an article where someone said that the speed gain for the hybrid drives were negligible.

sorry if I sounded harsh - I just wanted a strong counter to your statement for those that might be influenced by it.

That's a good price on the 500GB drive, but the 750GB model is a much better drive IMHO.

this.

and from a little bit of testing with the 500 GB model in a white 24in iMac, it DID speed up booting, app launching, and read/write test using AJA were 100 MB/sec for both.

that's the white Intel iMac, with only the 1.5 MB SATA connection, not the 3 or 6 of newer Macs.

it took a few reboots and launching of apps - the drive learns what to cache in NAND memory.

Not BS at all. Look at the benchmarks. It'll speed up booting, but compared to fast traditional drives, it's not much faster - especially compared to a SSD. 100MB/s? I get that with my 2-year-old traditional 2.5" drive.

But if you're going from one of the stock Apple drives, especially in an older MB/MBP, you'll still see a huge performance boost.
