Any use for Apple ADC displays?

I seem to now have an excess of these-- both the LCD's and the older CRT's (clear acrylic) that have the ADC connector and were intended to work with a G4.

IIRC, these won't work with just about any other system except a G4 that has the ADC connector... but I feel bad about just tossing them. Especially the CRT... that thing in its own way is a piece of art.

If you have an adapter you can convert a DVI signal to ADC, I have one here for just those occasions. However it's an inelegant solution at best as it's big and messy and only a single input . Unless you have a 23" Cinema Display, you're better off buying a new 20"er.

BTW they also work on G5s.

I still use an ADC LCD on a G4 that I have hooked up to a scanner. Paid $20 for the G4 Quicksilver, 17" LCD ADC monitor and the HK round speakers and subwoofer. Sold the speakers for $10 at a garage sale. The machine works fine as a scanning machine, and I'm probably going to use it to digitize some concert tapes I've collected over the years.

The scanner software was PPC and never updated to a UB. The scanner is an HP that has the photo feeder, so I can put 20 4x6 prints in at a time and have them scanned in automatically. Not sure if any other software would work properly with that scanner.

Most of those were only 1024x768 - I have quite a few of them too. They are kinda still pretty to just toss though. I have some DVI adapters that Apple sold, but still don't have a functional use for them.

IIRC, these need an ADC -> DVI adapter (powered and pricey) to work with a machine that only has DVI inputs, and it doesn't work with the CRT, and only works with the LCD models. Can anyone confirm that my memory is accurate about that?

There are a fair number of hacks out there for the ADC if you are handy with the soldering iron. Some work with the CRT and some with LCD, but as I said you need to comfortable with cracking open the cable/case.

Hope this helps.

The adapter definitely is powered and pricey - used to be $99 new. I don't remember about the LCD-only limitation, though.

IIRC, before they were $99 new, they were $199 new for early adopters... :-)

still have have one connecting the seldom used G5 quad to an original LCD Apple Cinema Display; about 70-80 pounds of vintage tech.

If I were close by, I'd offer to take one off your hands, but I think we're on opposite coasts.

I wish I had known about the hacks 5 years ago. I'd have converted a 17" and a 20" display.

Right now, with 1080P displays ~$150, I wouldn't bother except for some fun.

Yes I had a couple of those adapters. I bought two smaller ADC LCDs off craigslist and they each came with one. I sold them on ebay for $80 apiece, then flipped the ADCs (which were cheap already) on CL again. Made a nice profit on that one.

I still have a 15" for my Cube. Sold my 17" when they were still bringing good money.

I've got a 23" ADC ACD that I'd like to run off my Cube.

One day I'll check that out.
