You can deep .Mac email without iCloud? I guess so.

I didn't know this:

What if I just want to keep using my email on all my devices?
As of May 1, you can choose to keep using your mail after MobileMe ends, even on devices that don’t meet the iCloud system requirements. Just go to me.com/move and select the option to keep using your email after MobileMe ends. Once you have completed this short process, your mail will continue to work on devices that don’t meet the iCloud requirements after MobileMe ends on June 30th, 2012.

Has anybody done this? Does a Mac Pro running 10.6.8 count as a device that don't meet the iCloud requirements?

This would be good for me, even though I'm begun to retire my .Mac email to another for professional use.

Yes, 10.6.8 counts. You have to adjust your Mail settings. I just made my me.com email an IMAP.

I do wonder exactly what this does. There were documented ways of using the iCloud email settings with pre-lion systems, but the switch to iCloud required using IMAP.

MobileMe supported POP too, so I wonder if this "keep MobileMe email" will keep POP alive past June 30th.

Apparently that's only if you still have an active MM account. I undertook a 60-day trial a year or so ago, and didn't like it. The 'Move' page won't let me do anything, though I assume that if I upgrade to Lion and join iCloud the ID would work.

Is iCloud email any different and/or any better than Mobile Me's?

About a week or so ago when I accessed my mobileme account via the web it gave me the option to move to iCloud as usual, but this time it also offered me a "Keep my email" option, presumably because my computer is not iCloud capable. So I clicked on that and it said "Now you will keep your email", with no further instruction whatsoever. If it requires any further action on my part they aren't letting on. My assumption is that this option won't appear if you run Lion.

I have no idea what to do with iCloud, but I just went to mm to get my .Mac email address locked in.

Maybe if you signed up with a .me address, they'll still have it on hold for you. I had a .mac address from way back when it was free (and that I can still use for AIM), but I'm a little tweaked at Apple to discover that they didn't hold that for me when I signed up for iCloud, thus creating a disconnect between the .mac and .me addresses (since I have the .mac, which I can only use for AIM, and someone else has the .me for everything else).

mobileme says it's not accepting new subscribers now.

Yeah, if I upgrade to Lion and join iCloud, then I would guess the .me address I created during the trial would work. Can't tell unless I do, though.

I also had a .mac address from back in the '90s, but stopped using it when Apple started charging. When I signed up for the Mobile Me trial, MM wouldn't let me use the .mac address. Turned out that they had given it to some guy in the UK. It still annoys me.
