Maybe if you signed up with a .me address, they'll still have it on hold for you. I had a .mac address from way back when it was free (and that I can still use for AIM), but I'm a little tweaked at Apple to discover that they didn't hold that for me when I signed up for iCloud, thus creating a disconnect between the .mac and .me addresses (since I have the .mac, which I can only use for AIM, and someone else has the .me for everything else).
