Is anyone impressed with this picture?

It's a cute enough picture. What's wrong with it?

I hope it isn't yours, because I am not really a fan. The idea is OK, but the execution could be better, IMHO, sorry.

These are just my thoughts . . .

I like the set up, the oranges, the peels. I would like to see it just a bit off center rather than right in the middle of the shot.

I would also like to see a bit more texture to the background, and a wee bit more contrast on the oranges themselves.

Now, all that said, these are just my opinions.

Re photography, I have finally learned to listen to myself and take things to where I like them. It would be great if everyone else liked them, but where my photography is concerned, its me I'm trying to please.

I think its a perfectly fine shot.

Here's an example of a shot my husband looked at and went huh?

His thoughts were, it's too dark, it's not in focus and the composition leaves a lot to be desired.

Myself? I've had the bobblehead pencil since I was a child, it sits in an old 1950s lipstick holder that belonged to a favorite aunt and the picture is of my Mother as a child, in a vintage handmade Native American frame I found at a flea market when I was about 15.

And I purposely lit it to my tastes.

Photography is subjective. Please yourself, its a wonderful journey.

Doesn't look like a photo to me. More like a painting. Very realistic painting, but subtle inconsistencies in lighting shadow and texture. For example, there is a bit too much orange color reflected in the shadows of the oranges on the paper. I could be wrong.

Omar Ortiz paints hyper realistic images. His website has some amazing portraits (some are NSFW).

Kate

But it is a photograph. A photograph of a painting.

So unless you physically view the actual painting, a photograph will
be your visual record of the artist's work.

I am going to paint this. It's going to be a painting of a photograph of a painting. Then I am gonna take a photo of my painting and post it online. who wants to go next?

A good point actually.

For example, taking a snapshot of a statue is not art. However, if you take some sort of macro photograph of a small portion of that statue, it is art. Likewise, if that statue is part of an overall composition, it is art.

The artist has gotten better through the years (if you scroll through the entire web page).

However, I always find feet and hands to be the most telling difference between a painting and a photograph. Artists just can't seem to capture the full nuance of those.

Kate,

I like that photo. Reminds me of some b&w pix I took ages ago. They'll never appeal to anyone but me, but they were exactly what I wanted. Very personal. And just for the record, yours is much better even in a non-personal way. :-)

No matter how you slice it, I have to agree with that pithy assessment.
