Most Reliable Email Client Please
Posted by: IronMac
Date: May 27, 2012 07:35PM
Ok, I am tired of Thunderbird 3 crashing on me every couple of weeks and losing the open email tabs.

Any suggestions as to the most reliable email client? I don't care about fancy sorting, searching, etc. I want something that does not crash (maybe once or twice a year), does not hog my memory and does not use up too much CPU cycles.

Thanks.

Is there some aversion to plain old Apple Mail?

Ive got 5 POP accounts, tons of rules, 30 mail box folders, and a 15 gig database. opens in seconds, has never crashed and uses 0 CPU

No aversion to Apple Mail (I see quite a few user complaints, though) but I may try that.

Might be because it's the most widely-used email client on Mac OS? I use it on 2 computers with 3 different IMAP accounts, all my co-workers use it. It has problems from time to time, but no show-stoppers for us.

That is so true. Ok, I am going to try TB 12 first (still downloading...34 mins left supposedly), then Apple Mail.

It seems that MailForge 3 was just released yesterday! (I am not superstitious......)

My mail box is not that huge...only around 7k in messages but if I work at it can probably prune quite a bit. I use Fastmail as my main email provider.

7,000 messages is like nothing.

there are also some excellent mail addons -- I use dockstar and attachment tamer -- plus mail has custom stationary, 1 click access to iPhoto, shift + command + I to send a web page direct from safari, etc, etc

Gmail in Chrome (or any other browser).

I don't think it supports Fastmail.

21 mins left to go on this download...sheesh!

Mail. Very reliable for me. Do a Google search for "Apple Mail plugins". Lots of features can be added on, many for free.

I use Fastmail and Thunderbird (currently on 12.01) and am showing 54,000 messages/2.059 GB for my inbox. No crashes.

Wow! That's a lot!

It turns out that I have about 9k messages but TB 3 was crashing on a frequent basis. It has been behaving for the past couple of months but it really got my goat this morning. (First, it was Word but going through all of the updates solved the issue, then it was Safari so I got rid of that...hello, Chrome and almost at the same time TB 3 so welcome Apple Mail.)

Apple's Mail looks pretty decent so far...relatively simplistic. I will have to make sure to put in tabs.

Clay, thanks for the link!

Reluctantly gave up Eudora for Apple Mail, and it's fine, really.

sounds like slow internet isn't helping.

Apple Mail is good.

did you try compacting your Tbird mailbox folders?

I ditto this, but make them all IMAP across several "mail holders" (gmail, Apple, my own), with several dozen Smart Folders, etc. I've tried scores of clients through the years (most recently Thunderbird, Postbox, Sparrow, etc.) and I *always* come back to Mail.

You didn't give much guidance in terms of what you were looking for outside of reliability, but some people swear by the email app Zoidberg offhandedly mentioned: Sparrow. I haven't used it myself (uncommitted Gmail user) but it has a sparing interface, Facebook/Dropbox/iCloud integration, and a complementary iOS app.

ever seen GIGABYTES of space recovered when compacting or rebuilding a giant Outlook database?

i'm thinking a Thunderbird database would benefit similarly.

That's really all I want, I just want something that does not crash and takes away all of my open tabs, sucks up memory and CPU cycles.
