Hack/Program to expand the dialog box in an open/save window?

I've had it with this; been dealing with this stupid small box since System 7 days. Is there an application, or a hack, that I can do that will allow me to make this box wider in open/save dialogs? Seems strange that I can almost write a paragraph as the name of my file but cannot see more than about a dozen letters at a time.
