HD Radio

The radio that wakes me up every weekday is still 20th century tech, analog AM/FM. I don't listed much, but when I do I would like a clear sound. Maybe a HD radio is the solution? anyone can recommend a good HD radio, maybe with iPod dock, reasonable quality, and not break the bank?

HD radio is not high definition; it's like listening to a very low bit rate mp3.

The bit rate can be as low as 25 kb/s.

I listen to HD radio every workday and it definitely does not sound "like a very low bitrate mp3."

Be aware though that you'll revert to an analog signal if reception is not good.

I love love love my Boston Acoustics Recepters. No iPod dock but there is an aux in.

space-time,

Do you still have a Touchpad?

Timepiece can be set up to use Pandora Radio as the alarm - that's what I've been using lately (although if the wifi connection or Pandora's servers go down, you'll likely wake up late)

HD is not a misnomer, it just uses an identical acronym that originally stood for something different, "Hybrid Digital." Like has been mentioned above, it does stand for NOT High Definition and can be terrible quality. People that have not learned the difference usually assume it means the other acronym and the broadcasters hoped the confusion would improve sales, but it backfired like many misleading promotion campaigns. HD radio can sound very good if the broadcaster cares and is willing to spend the money but satellite radio is usually better.

Agree. I enjoy the information feed as much as the signal, personally; and also having multiple channels available for some stations.

thanks folks, I admit I was one of those who thought HD = High Definition in this case. Thanks for educating me.

It's nothing more than digital data being broadcast over subchannels in the FM domain. In some places its pretty poor quality, in others it's great.

You think they could come up with a better name than Recepter?

HD Radio is a scam!

"HD Radio really isn't 'HD'"

"Quite honestly, it doesn't stand for anything, said Peter Ferrera, president and CEO of the HD Digital Radio Alliance. The concept was somewhat of a steal from HD television, where viewers know it means better quality."

Of course, the "HD" means high-definition - it is a marketing ploy to confuse HD Radio with the mandatory HDTV conversion. Even some in-dash HD radios look exactly like Sirius radios. iBiquity's HD logo design is also a steal from XM radio.

In extended hybrid-mode, the HD2/HD3 signals make reception of adjacent analog signals difficult, as iBiquity is trying to force listeners onto their local HD Radio stations, only. The technology doesn't work in many cases, and the side-channels dropout to silence. There are too many technical flaws with the IBOC system to ever work properly.

I don't care what it's called, what it seems like it should be but isn't, or what someone who can't find any newer reference than 2006 thinks about it . . . I enjoy it almost every day.

The Recepter had more problems than its name, but if you can get hold of a Stereo version "pre-tested" by someone else, you will fall in love with it.
