"Sprint Nextel (S, Fortune 500) said Tuesday that it plans to shut down the Nextel network as early as June 30, 2013. Sprint has long talked about its intention to wind down Nextel, but this is the first time it has offered up a precise end date."

Sprint has rolled out direct connect (push to talk) over 3G. The Nextel network is old technology and is being replaced by 3 and 4G. The Nextel tech doesn't work over 3 or 4G, so it was a matter of time.

I guess I'll have to retire my i830 as my backup alarm clock by then since it probably won't get its time auto-updated. smiling smiley

I left Nextel because of service issues, my reception improved and billing dropped by 2/3rd.

extremely annoying, but the 'walkie-talkie' feature did make sense for many business users (IIRC, no minutes charged)
