if I am allergic to nuts, can I use Pecan wood in the grill

technically I am allergic to hazelnuts, but doctor told me to avoid all nuts (and even peanuts). Two reasons; one is that the immune system could get confused and develope an allergy to other nuts, same way it happened suddenly with hazelnuts. Second reason is that often different types of nuts are processed/packaged in plants that share equipment, so they could package hazelnuts and then walnuts for example.

I didn't think to ask about burning Pecan wood in the grill, I don't think that could be a problem, would it? I'll ask in a few month when I see him. Until then I'd like to try some flavors when grilling

You should definitely give it a try, because it's FUN to TAUNT FATE, isn't it?

What's the worst that could happen...filling your yard with an atomized allergen that could give you a very severe reaction, when there are any number of other things you could put in your grill....?!

Is pecan wood that special? I am addicted to mesquite for the grill. Use that and no other wood will even enter your brain....

I spent a night in the hospital for smoke-borne poison ivy followed by a week of misery. Picture head blown up like a balloon and stuff oozing out of eyes and nose. I wouldn't risk it.

This post discusses the issue, from a lay POV:

The question seems to be whether the proteins in the nut that cause the allergic reaction are also in the wood. That's a technical question; perhaps there are some forestry experts on this board who can address it.

yep, certainly my assumption that nuts is nuts, and wood ain't nuts... he should really just try it :-)

Most wood trees bear some sort of fruit or nut, and by all appearances, s-t didn't seem averse to grilling in general, which to me implies that he's lived through grilling w/ other nut bearing woods, at least well enough to be alive and asking about pecan wood now.

I made some pecan smoked cheddar cheese, and it was amazing. Mesquite is rather strong.
