Sad but predictable - Losses and Layoffs at RIM

This was the number one technology company in all of Canada.

They waited at least 2 years too long to fire their co-CEOs, and their products show it.

Few CEOs can drive product lines directly. As we all know, it tends to be very rare to have one as a visionary. In this regard, they were doomed years ago. Even if they did a full stop in the summer of 2007 they wouldn't have had enough time to compete even with Android later, which had an insider's head start to what Apple was doing.

RIM was smart to target and support Enterprise right off the bat: that was the historical MS path to success. No one expected these same users to later force Enterprise to accept their more sophisticated smartphones.

RIM was a one trick pony - they were doomed from the start. They assumed that the one trick would stun and amaze people forever.

In some ways, reminds me of Palm in the earlier days, with the Palm Pilot.

I have two friends who (up to this point) wouldn't own any phone but a Blackberry and they are very upset about RIM.

I have 10 coworkers that were diehard Blackberry fans. Today? 6 iPhones and 4 Androids. It was an even split but one of the Android users had battery problems on their phone. After 3 replacements he switched to the iPhone.

I'll be stuck using a Blackberry from work as my boss wants the 2-way capabilities for us. Not many phones can be used for 2-way walkie-talkie style communication any more.
