Thinking about a Kia Sedona. Try and scare me off.

I have never owned a Kia and am possibly interested in a used 2008 with 51K miles. Anyone care to share the good and the bad stories? I test drove it and it feels great. No power side doors but I am kinda getting used to that since one of our sliding doors on our Town & Country failed and have to manually open it. The rest of it looks very similar to what we own now.

I owned a 2006 Kia Sorento for 4 years and was very happy with it with two exceptions, the seats were uncomfortable as they could get and the fuel milage was almost always 16MPG (it was a four wheel drive though).

Gas in CA is over $4.

I think it would have to be a great price. Sedona is getting a major overhaul in 2013...

Wow- that gas mileage is TERRIBLE. I have an '07 Honda CR-V. On my last trip (highway miles) I got 31.2 MPG. In the city I get between 20 and 23.

Dmann,

The CR-V has a plain ol' 4 cylinder and the Sedona has a 6 cylinder. Throw a six cylinder into a CR-V and it's gas mileage will drop noticeably and be more in line with the MPG rating of the Sedona.

Dmann,

Somewhat... Kind of makes me wonder how the Sedona compares to other six banger equipped minivans. Likely, MPG-wise, comparable or somewhat worse.

Our '07 Odyssey gets 15 in town (Pasadena is littered with traffic lights - it's horrible) and 24-26 on the highway depending on my leadfoot and other variables. Rated for 17-23 like the Kia, IIRC.

We used to own a CR-V andit doesn't need a 6 cyl. You never see anyone towing anything with them anyway. It had
plenty of get p and go. Hated the seats and ride though.

I think that model had a lot more steel (as opposed to alloys) than the more expensive minivans like the Odyssey; it's heavier so the fuel economy suffers a bit.
I have driven Chrysler minivans for years and don't regret it at all. I had an '08 which has a pretty bad rap-I had some issues-but I now have an '11 T&C with the new 3.6 and it's great. That thing flies and I average 21-22 with it. I have gotten 26 on the highway; the rating is 17-25. I use it for work and for pleasure and we are planning our yearly kayak trip and we sleep in it, haul our kayaks and bicycles, etc.
If you like it, get it! Happy minivanning!

Probably not a concern with a used model, but Kia just announced they are discontinuing the Sedona. If you don't keep it until the wheels fall off, it may lose value a little faster and be harder to resell.

The seats are stuffed with the husks of dead scorpions (and the occasional egg case).

The timing belt would need to be changed at 60K miles if it's like a 2005 Sportage.

Grateful,

I hear you but have to disagree. I test drove several CR-Vs, ranging from an '05 to an '09. Each felt underpowered in comparison to SUVs (compact and larger) with turbo-charged 4 cylinders or 6 cylinder engines. FWIW, I recently rented a 2012 Dodge Caravan with less than 1000 miles on it. Nice car, though it felt underpowered even with a six banger when trying to get on a highway.

I've tried to like the KIA minivan, but it's just about the most boring, dull, non-inspiring minivan out there. Maybe with their new styling cues in their other cars, this one will get a redesign.

Consumer Reports is showing the '08 Kia Sedona as more negative than positive. The Sedona shifts dramatically for the better in the 2010 & 2011 model years. I recently got a Sprinter van to replace my 2004 Toyota Sienna. I took a serious look at the 2012 Sedona. That would have been my choice if I opted for a minivan instead of a maxivan.

No it doesn't have the power of our 290hp Tahoe but we never had any trouble getting on the interstate with our '07 CR-V.

I know I'm hijacking this thread, but I wanted to mention that I don't find the CR-V "underpowered" at all. Of course, this is MY OPINION. Just as Robert M stated HIS OPINION.

I cover 4 states for work, all by car. I am on the road, on average, 2 weeks out of every month and am in cities and rural areas. I live in Chicago (yes, IN the city where drivers are not exactly timid.) At almost 100,000 miles, I have never, ever had a problem with the car while entering or exiting the freeway, merging into speeding traffic or the like. When the AC is going full blast, yes, there is a lag when accelerating hard, but nothing to the point of being unsafe.

For those who are into cars and can detect nuances in performance, I don't doubt that the CR-V isn't the most exciting ride, but I do want to clarify that for those of us who just want to get from point A to point B safely, the car is far more than adequate.

Kind of like us Mac heads bemoaning processor speeds, RAM limitations and browser add-ons. The majority of people I know just want to surf the web and read email. smiling smiley

Dmann,

I was speaking of the Dodge minivan when it came to getting on the highway - not the CR-V. Still, this is definitely an individual kind of situation, which is why I own a Mazda CX-7 with a turbocharged 4 instead of a CR-V of any year. Then again, while I'm not into cars per say, all of the vehicles I've had in the last 12 years have had 6 or 8 cylinder engines and power to spare. So, that definitely impacted my perception of many of the vehicles I tested prior to purchasing my Mazda.

Thank you. I let me subscription go just last month. I was going to ask if anyone could look it up for me. I think I am walking from this one. I just can't find a lot of positives to push me to get it.

We are not in the best position to get something but have to. Just heard today that the Town & Country is also being discontinued after 2014.

The Mazda CX-5 is surprisingly nice for the price. Not as powerful as their commercials would lead you to believe, but worth a look

we've had generally good luck with our three optimas, though the front seats do get a little uncomfortable on a long drive. fuel mileage is likely average. build is generally good. i'd certainly consider another one, although i'd also look around.

good luck!
