iPod Compact Flash upgrade-- still no luck

Received replacement CF card today, as Transcend had said it sounded defective. Replacement: Exactly the same. Sad iPod after reset.
Mac sees it, mounts it, but thinks it's read-only and formatting options in DU are grayed out.

Very, very little info on the web about this, except that reports can be found in Amazon reviews from others who have had success with this card/adapter/iPod.

Next step I guess, if I want to get into "throwing good time/money after bad" is to make a trip up to the north side and drop $10 on a CF reader which I otherwise have no use for, to see . . . . what is it I want to see exactly? The card is currently FAT-32 formatted-- what's the "native" format of a HDD-based iPod? Why do others seem to be able to drop the card as is into an iPod and have it format automatically?
I guess I should see if their support folks are willing to drop the card in a reader and tell me if it looks like it's working normally?

Clarifying questions welcome, but I wouldn't try to follow this without reading the thread linked at the top first.

Well, I grabbed some reading glasses and stuck the thing under a desk lamp, and realized the ZIF receptacle on the adapter housing was not well made, and needed to be kind of squeezed while pushing the harness in to get it to mate completely . . .and "boom,", happiness.
Taking its sweet time to fill the card, but that was kind of expected at 133x. Next comes battery replacement, button-up, and coffee table reclamation.

This was a replacement one I believe, does that mean you still have the original or did you have to send it back? If you still have it might be interesting to see if that extra squeeze allows that one to work as well.

At some point one of the side tabs broke off the original, but I've got a feeling it works as well as this one even though it's also got the same manufacturing sloppiness. Not sure whether I want to tempt fate by messing with this any more than I have to.
iPod is now teh Snappy. Testing battery life-- ought to be better now (was down to 4 or 5 hours.)

Interesting article on iPods and sound quality.

Partly explains why my Nano 1gs and 3gs gave me warm fuzzies but the 5g not as much.

good to hear you've had success!

thanks for that link, too - i have 2 working 5th gens and hope they keep going for a while.

Which iPods have a Wolfson audio chip?

iPod 1G & 2G (WM8721), 3G (WM8731), 4G(WM8975), 5G (WM87588G) and 5.5G (WM87588G)

iPod nano 1G (WM8975G), 2G (WM8975), 3G (WM1870)

iPod Touch 1G (WM8758BG)

iPod mini (Wolfson 8731?)

iPhone (WM8758BG) and the iPhone 3G (WM6180).

In summary, all the early iPods up to 5G Classic used Wolfson chips.

Well, not the best use of a Saturday afternoon but I got the new battery in and got it buttoned up. A few close calls after taking the HDD ribbon out from the cicuitboard end. I saw reports that you could put the original HDD's rubber "bumpers" on the CF enclosure, but I couldn't get things closed neatly with them in place, and there's no rattle without them.

I was concerned that the battery might not fit since there was no info confirming it would work in early 20 GB 4th gen (which has a thinner form factor than the 40 GB and presumably the Photo) and it was indeed thicker than the stock battery, but things came out OK and the clickwheel works fine once closed up (maybe due to leaving out the extra padding.)
It was this battery:

Showing half full prior to charge. I'll bet I get a runtime of 20+ hours once charged, which is pretty good considering this gen was advertised with "up to 12 hours" when in production.

iPod stopped at 1/2 full for some reason. Had run about 7 hours before I crashed.
recharged, restart at 2 PM.
