Squiggle Update 2: New Display

Thursday a nice fellow named Chuck showed up with a new display for my 27" iMac. He works for an international company that, among other things, does onsite service for Apple, and he knew exactly what he was doing (he also works on PCs and servers, and has been in the computer business since he worked for @#$%& years ago). He used a couple of large suction cups to lift out the glass, then removed the LCD screen. That's held in with about six screws, plus of course ribbon connectors. He installed the new screen and made sure there was no dust on the screen before replacing the glass. It can be a problem, especially in some environments (e.g. where there's construction underway). So now I've got a brand-new display on my iMac!

Ten minutes after he left I I noticed what appeared to be a couple of bad pixels in the lower left corner, which bothered me. But I just tapped on the class with my fingernail, and they're gone. Must have been dust on the inside of the glass.

Anyway, the squiggle is gone, so I'm happy. It was two years ago when I walked into the Apple Store and saw the gorgeous screen of the 27" iMac, and knew I had to have one.

But I'm not impressed with the idea of having to remove the display to get inside it (e.g. to replace a hard drive). I don't think I'd try it. Your average Dull Optiplex is a lot easier to work inside, or upgrade. If I were to do it again, I might consider a Mini plus 27" display. But Chuck said the Minis are actually a pain to work on, as they use really finicky little flat connectors. Like others on this board, I wonder why Apple won't make an inexpensive tower. My iMac (refurb) was $1,700; a Pro plus display would be double that. Now that Apple is making inroads into the enterprise market with MacBook Pros, this would seem to be an ideal time to offer IT-friendly desktops to business. They could call it the Mac Midi. . . But that's a whole 'nother discussion.
