can't tell if you're serious or not, but that's what I'm thinking. Considering the 2007 imacs are supported, I can't see how a one of those could outpace a 2006 Mac Pro.

Apple sez: time to move on and upgrade that 6-year-old Mac.

it's been that way with OS X for quite some time, and people always wonder why.

My MacPro is a 1,1, so it won't run Mountain Lion. I didn't expect it to -- I don't think it's an issue of horsepower, but 32-bit firmware.

That's a lot of pesto.

Do new OSes EVER work on 6 year old computers? This doesn't bother me at all - I'm happy that my 08 model is supported - I was a little worried. It's 4 years old...

Alrighty, our 1.83 C2D mini is off the list. It's OK with Lion, but really shouldn't be running Lion if the OS is being asked to do a lot with multiple users and apps running all the time like we do. Gets bogged down. I imagine with a typical single user it'd be fine.

In a way this is kind of a relief. I may go back to SL on it and regain some agility.

…and they haven't even produced a new MacPro to use with Mountain Lion!

Not that I could afford it, anyhow! dunno smiley

old fogey smiley

OTOH… are we "1,1 MacPro" users going to be particularly hurt by being OS impaired?

If so, I guess it would be time to switch to a Mini, once the price of larger SSD's comes down some more.

I can't say that, outside of all my extra USB ports, I would lose anything by switching to a Mini. Nowadays, I basically just use my computer for internet and email, contacts and calendar.

Hmmm… would my FW iSight camera work with the new models, using the Thunderbolt/FW adapter?

Do you think that I could get enough for my MacPro, with 12GB of OWC ram and FW/USB PCI card for extra ports, to pay for a new Mini? I even have the original box!

I'll have to wait for "the new models" to be announced, though???

Yeah but it's EFI "firmware" & the 1,1 has 64-bit data paths.
I'd be willing to bet that right now, some of the x86 project geniuses are working to make older MacPros into ML capable hackintoshes ...bwahahaha

You might change your mind with an SSD and at least 3 gigs of RAM in there. My Mini is a generation older than yours, but upgraded, and it runs Lion quite nicely with the SSD. I think ML will be a real challenge with the 32-bit firmware and the graphics card, though. Not impossible...but a challenge.

I might try an SSD one day, if I keep it. Been thinking about an SSD for over a year. Then again, spending another $100 or so on it, after the two 2GB sticks already in there and the 250GB hdd (80GB orig.) probably isn't very wise.

Sorta surprised at your L endorsement. Thought you were in the forum's anti-Lion camp.

I thought about switching to a mini but my 06 MacPro has a higher geekbench score than a brand new mini. It's even got a higher score than my i7 iMac. And it's on par with the latest iMacs. Those are my only 2 options since another tower is just too darn expensive. If I bought a new machine it'd have to be a significant move forward.

agree smiley …pretty much.

I'm not clear about how our '06 Mac Pro's could have a "higher score" than a brand new Mini, but for me, the 1,1 Mac Pro's 32 bit limitation, which means no further OS upgrades, is the handwriting on the wall.

The cost of a new Mini makes it the ONLY route that I would have for an affordable Mac Pro upgrade.

"If I bought a new machine it'd have to be a significant move forward" Agreed!

I wonder when and if new Mini models will be announced and what they'll cost with a decent size SSD?

The 2011 mini here scored 8520. Last I checked my MacPro was around 1000 higher. It's the upgraded processors I added that help the most.

Ah hah!

In other words, the newest Mini's should easily outperform my STOCK Mac Pro.

From Everymac.com:

Mac Pro "Quad Core" 2.66 (Original) 5190/5873
Mac mini "Core i7" 2.7 (Mid-2011) 6980/7758
Mac mini "Core i7" 2.0 (Mid-2011/Server) 8573/9456*

Right???

btw, is there a reason not to buy the server version for everyday use?

I'm not at all clear about the how the server model is different, beyond the extra hard drive configuration. From what I can tell, it's just a matter of some extra server software, which you don't have to use.

I know that the graphics support is less on the server, so will I be able to run my TV from the server model like I do now on my Mac Pro? Would there be a noticeable degradation?
