I don't get it. A minor change in thickness means, well, nothing. It even costs a DVD drive.

Forced them to remake the magsafe adapter connector, too.

And cut out the FireWire... and Ethernet.

It means more than a pound less, or the 15" model being slightly lighter than the 13" (w/DVD) model. Carry weight means a lot to many people. And you can always get the hard media version if you want.

Thin is nice, but the weight savings and hi res screen are bigger deals, in my opinion anyway.

No anti-glare option for the Retina, but HDMI and dual TB ports must mean some mean video options...

kinda neat w/ native dual external monitor option, but does that mean HDMI is gonna strictly be for porting 1080p to HDTV? IOW, how powerful are they gonna try to make it?

"Dual display and video mirroring: Simultaneously supports full native resolution on the built-in display and up to 2560 by 1600 pixels on up to two external displays, at millions of colors"

That's a lot of oomph w/o factoring the HDMI; if you've ripped a movie to the internal drive, can you play it on your HDTV at the time while you're driving the built-in display and your two 30" monitors? Assuming the GT650M is driving the hi-res units, leaving Intel HD 4000 to HDMI?

The SD slot is on the right hand side, judging from other pics.

The no anti-glare option is tough to swallow, but getting used to the SD slot on the other side would be easy to get used to.

Ahh, thanks.

Do these new MBP's obsolete OWC? Is storage space and RAM both soldered onto the motherboard now? If so, that's kind of lame. In most of my machines, I've started off at a lower configuration and moved to a higher memory or storage configuration as the software has evolved and I've needed the upgrades.

Huh? I don't believe there's been any mention of such a thing. Am I missing something?

Good question I'd like to know, too. Is it commodity ram and flash storage, or Apple special? Apple wants $200 for an 8 GB RAM upgrade. Be nice to beat that at least with third-party sticks.

The RAM in the MBPR is integrated on the motherboard - you can see it in the video in the presentation. This is an obvious limitation. The SSD is a stick like the MBA - it's removable with some uncommon tools. But on the MBA at least, there is a warning that removing the SSD card voids the warranty. That wasn't visible in the event video today, but I would expect to find it on a real shipping unit. I hope the continue the older line a while longer.

Oh, and the battery looks like there is no way for a consumer to replace - looks like 4 batteries actually. In the original unibody design, removing the batteries would also void the warranty, but at least you COULD replace it with a 3rd party battery way down the road.

The MBPR will become garbage after the battery dies - or at least, it wont be wireless anymore.

This computer IS the 15" MBA from the rumor mill - they just aren't calling it that, but look inside and it's obvious.

Probably not the SSD, but I would not be surprised if the RAM was soldered since the RAM in the MacBook Air is non upgradeable.

It's the MacBook Air Pro everyone was clamoring for a few months back. Be careful what you ask for, right?

Hmmm, suppose I should watch the video. I'll probably mute it so I don't have to hear the marketing speak.

It's not surprising that the RAM is soldered and a standard SSD isn't used in the MBPR.

As mentioned, this is the 15" MBA so many wanted. That is, before Apple made it.

I've got an MBPR loaded in the Apple Store, and my finger is making little circles around the Place Order Now button.

I really wish I could get the Retina display on the one of the "normal" 'Books. I would have pressed it already.

Well, the ram is probably a one-time decision. But the storage and the battery could be upgraded by third party service. Not as cheap as a DIY, but could still extend the life of the 'book in the future for less than a new machine.

There is little in the MBPR I'm interested in besides the screen.

And that's a glossy finish at that.

75% less glare in this screen from the glossy MBP version (so says schiller)

No glass on top of it, the display has multiple levels integrated into it. So if you accidentally crack it, you don't just crack glass, but the display will be toast.

Once again, Apple sacrifices function for form.

"Look how thin this is! We are so cool!"

(So thin they didn't leave room to accomodate an ethernet port.)
