what just happened? where did Skype_old go?

browsing on wife's MBP (BTW: I check HD last night, all is fine, routine maintenance). I go into Applications and notice 2 version of Skype, a "Skype" and a "Skype_old". OK, I was curious how old the _old version was, so I try to run it. It hangs, I only get the "Skype" menu next to the Apple but no more. I browse in Chrome for a minute or two, when I check Skype it's still not fully started, so I force quit. Now there is no more "Skype_old" anywhere on this hard drive, not even in trash. The other "Skype" works just fine now. There is no evidence of "Skype_old" at all, like it never was present on this hard drive. How could an Application disappear like that?

Just to make sure I was not dreaming, I fired up Time Machine. Yes, there was a Skype_old as can be seen here. completely gone now. if there were not for Time Machine, I would think I was imagining things.

How about Skype detected it was an old version and you were catching it in the middle of updating itself?

sounds plausible, I remember Skype asking me several times to update and I said "later". Maybe that was it, but I never saw this happening before.
