I love it when people are specific...

The application for a new passport states:

One Passport Photo that is stapled to the application within the space provided using four vertical staples, one in each corner

Think they would mind if I just used a small piece of tape across the top? devil smiley

I wonder how many they get that are not done as they request.

Some people should just not qualify to go anywhere. Sticky tape?...No passport for YOU!

no, stick to the instructions, but do unusual things. here is two ideas you could even combine smiling smiley

-put it upside down. They didn't saw that the picture has to be in the correct orientation; they seem more concerned with the staples. So put the photo upside down.

-put the photo facing backwards (front side toward the application). Let them see the back. Again, use four vertical staples. See what happens

Actually, they go one step further. On another page, they show a sample photo in the correct orientation with the four little staples shown in red, and they even note that the four red lines indicate the staples and their correct placement. They really take this part of the application seriously it seems. A bunch of photos must have come off at some time in the past, and this is their way of making sure it doesn't happen again.

You would hope that the pics and application are scanned in upon receipt, but I guess they may keep the original paperwork or something. At least you can't say they didn't tell you exactly how they wanted the info presented.

Reminds of when, back in my youth, I was protesting a new law that boats had to be registered with the state and display the registration number on either side of the bow which I thought ruined the looks of the boat. I put the registration number on using Roman Numerals - it didn't specify Arabic (or more correctly European digits - Incidentally, the numerals 0123456789 are more properly known as European digits. The numerals actually used in Arabic script, the true Arabic numerals, are of different forms. [www.unc.edu]

I'm an American living overseas. I don't mess with the passport folks or immigration. They feel all powerful to me. Coming in to the country, I always have this sense of relief after walking through the doors to get out of customs. Must be a guilty conscience from improper staples in the past.

When I was a teen in SoCal they decided to crack down on us motorcycle riding trouble makers and began passing laws. One said that we had to have mirrors, so we went and got a hold of those little dental mirrors and put those on. That one had to be re-written.

Then when I moved to Oregon they passed a law that said we had to wear helmets. So we wore them strapped to our knee. That one had to be re-written, too.

Of course, if you want to USE the passport anytime soon you might not want to get into an "exchange" with the State Department. And if you have to PAY for each resubmission, that might contribute to the decisions. (I don't know if the resubmission of a rejected application requires another payment but it could happen.)

Many years ago the government provided physical exam that I was invited to take by Lyndon Johnson included an aptitude test. I gave consideration to going for a zero correct score. Shoot, I had three out of four choices to get each item wrong and I figured I could probably find at least one wrong answer. But then it occurred to me that if I messed up and got a couple of items right, I'd have a really low score that MIGHT be taken as legitimate resulting in, shall we say, limited opportunities for the next few years. Since I was in grad school at the time, the Army might not share the humor that I saw in the situation.

When I submitted my application I used tape. Staples seemed like an over-kill. Just got my passport back - 6 weeks.

See, I KNEW there were people who did not submit the photo they way they requested. I'll bet the % they get that are exactly as they request is well below 50%.

You've got a 50/50 chance of getting the one OCD/Nasty Passport processing clerk who just LOVES to toss stuff back in the "Wrong Papers !!" pile with a big "REJECTED" stamp across it.

You just know what that clerk looks like. The only way to protect against rejection is to include a coupon for a bucket of fried chicken and a dozen Twinkies.

My daughter got that lady for her driver's test. Think of every horrible stereotype of a DMV worker, and this lady was it. I felt so sorry for my daughter. She made one mistake, which I really didn't think was a mistake at all, but the lady said "Fail" nonetheless. The she added insult to injury when she said, "You seem to drive very well, but I am going to fail you anyway." sad smiley

When my wife applied for her citizenship the immigration form required a photo. The instructions said to simply get a passport photo taken and use that. How easy can it be? So imagine our surprise when we showed up at the immigration office and they refused her application b/c the attached pic wasn't up to snuff. Fortunately, there JUST HAPPENED to be an "official" store right next door that took immigration pictures. At a super highly inflated rate of course.
